Hey, I think I figured out how to reduce mouse lag in SE5, at least if you're using an NVIDIA card... Go into your NVIDIA control panel (might need to update your driver to get that), set it to advanced mode, go to "adjust image settings with preview", select "use the advanced 3d image settings", click "take me there", and look for something that says "Maximum pre-rendered frames". By default that's set to 3. You want to set it to 0. This really seems to help with the mouse lag, at least on my machine! 
Though it does appear to make combat replays a bit choppy... 
Or maybe that was some other setting I was fiddling with; I'm gonna experiment a bit and see what the optimal settings are!

It worked well for me.
I have Vista 64-bit, Intel Q6600, 4 gigs of RAM with a GeForce card. The mouse moves soooooooooo much better!! I ran a very big combat and it was a little choppy, but not really that bad as you spend way more time outside combat where the better mouse action is a godsend!

I never thought of that but I really haven't noticed much of a problem anyway. (GeForce 6600, XP Media, 2G ram)
Now that you mention it, I have noticed it but it was just one of those many things I learned to put up with.

just stumbled upon this thread, i never check this board, so i guess i lucked out eh? 
cheers muchly for the tip, i only set it to 1 tho as i figured if 0 is creating laggy combat i'd take the mid route as my mouse isnt normaly that bad ^_^

It does help speed up the mouse cursor!
Doesn't help with the issue I experience though with the extraordinary long wait I have for loading the ships list window or the planet window.
