Is it worth it? |
Hey everyone. I know I am kind of asking what could be a biased group but I recently downloaded this game on GameTap to check it out. I never bothered before because it basically seemed like a text game that wasn't very developed and would probably be disappointing. Well needless to say I was wrong. The lack of pretty graphics is the only detail that seems to be missing. Whoever thought all this up deserves a nice round of applause.
Anyway, after I got done with the tutorial I was in shock. Because it didn't teach me much really. Too many unanswered questions like what are the uses of the different ship decks, what about combat, diplomacy, and all those other buttons at the top that I haven't used yet? So I started looking around for info before I was lost completely. (GameTap chooses the worst games to not have manuals with) Then I started reading all the bad reviews on bugs left and right, lots of options that in the end serve no purpose or benefit except to take up more time, turns that take 30 minutes to process, and a dumb AI that is not logical or even a challenge.
I also noticed there was a patch done just 4 months ago which gives me hope because someone must still be working to improve the problems. This is a game I think I could have a lot of fun with but I figured I needed to find out if I should even bother playing or will I end up frustrated and disappointed. I am really tolerant of minor glitches and bugs that aren't completely game breaking ( I played MMO's for years and they are the worst) but I would really hate to play a game that apparently can take days and weeks to have some bug kick in and ruin it all. (I played Freespace for two weeks before getting to a part that kept giving me an error when I tried to advance to the next part) I noticed a few people rather play SE 4 instead of this one because it has been patched to good working order. I want to support games that go outside the box to make a different gaming experience but I don't want to buy a broken product either. One place was actually selling a package with both 4 & 5 included but four looks even more basic.
Anyway thanks for any opinions and suggestions you might have on this.

Re: Is it worth it?
SEV is made to be played multiplayer. Its at its finest when your going head to head with other people and trying to outgun them.
SEIV is finished and for a good single player taste its excellent.
OR go back to SEIII, it has more of the same 'feel' as V. Even if you do decide to go with IV, your still supporting the developement of V... assuming MM still gets money for the sales.
Re: Is it worth it?
Keep up to date on the patches. Hope you have 1.74 by now.
Re: Is it worth it?
Depend on what you are paying for it. Most on this board seem to go MP. I don't play MP so can't answer to that. As a SP game don't waste your money, look elsewhere.
Re: Is it worth it?
I'm one of those exceptions who is a longtime SP but only played MP twice so far. I bought every version with SP in mind. Yes, as a SP game it bites but I may be considered a hard core player. Besides, at worst it is still much better than MOO3.

Re: Is it worth it?
Hello, and welcome to the boards and the game.
You should really consider downloading Balance Mod by Captain Kwok; as it will give a much better AI (well it will give an AI at least!), and there are some very nice ship sets as well to be had by some dedicated players of the game.
Great game that is still a little rough around the edges, but there is hope. I do trust you will continue to get many hours of enjoyment out of the game and be part of the ongoing SEV community.
