Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5? |
I bought this game a LONG time ago now and it still does'nt work properly. The list of bugs seems to grow, not diminish with each patch. At best the AI is rudimentary and at worst it's non-existant.
I stuck by this series when flashier games like Galacic Civ's came out to find that my loyalty has been repaid with a substandard game that has, in my opinion, not improved since the first patch. At least Gal Civ and other titles are playable when installed.
If SE5 had been a £10 release I would'nt have much to complain about, but I paid £35 for it and I feel aggrieved that it has been released with no concern as to the end product.
I realise that a lot of the SE community has spent a great deal of time modding and patching this game themselves and I can only applaud them for their efforts but this does'nt excuse MM from their duty to provide a workable product.
Suffice to say SE5 has been deleted from my hard drive and I will not be buying any more MM games.
Sorry about the rant but I dont feel that MM have had enough criticism over this farce.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I've run out of patience many times but kept coming back. Can't explain why. Its like the old Mark Twain saying - "Quiting smoking is easy, I've done it a hundred times!".
SE:V more than a frustation
It just has so much $%#^ing Potential!!! we give up on it, come back remembering that potential, and spend countless hours (Some of us) trying to improve it. its just sooo much of a shame that it doesnt live up to that potential.. I still have hope though.. we have some nice ideas on some mods coming out (BM 1.15) which btw i think I speak for ALOT of us when I say that the BM really should have been the initial release of SE:V.
The worst for me is that I spent all this time trying to improve and test and tweak that by the time i think its ready for me to play, im sick of it.. its like a vicious cycle.. love hate relationship.. NOO, not the ACCESS VIOLATION!!! ill be good. I promise. NOOOOO

and sometimes, I really hate that some things are hard coded the way they are, like if we can mod as much as we can, why not the whole game, or at least things that are actually important to mod.. ohh well.. have to put up with it for now.. Somehow this game even through all the problems and unrealistic things, is all I want to do for the entire day.. sad i know
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
first off, let me say, overall, I love the game.
But at the end of the day I absolutely agree that it is a farce that the game was released in such a sorry state. However, I disagree that the patches have made things worse, on the contrary, the patches have helped a lot.
I have seen threads like this before and its inevitable that people will post things like "just go install this mod or that mod". You know what? I shouldn't have to do a damn thing other than install the stock game to have it be playable.
Would you buy a brand new car and accept the fact that when you pick it up at the dealer the car wont go over 37 mph? or that the CD player cant play if you are using the A/C at the same time? or if you use the cruise control while the headlights are on, the engine dies and requires 5 minutes before you can restart it? You would tell anyone that told you to "just take it to some shop and have it modified" (so that it will function as it should have from the very start) to go f_ck themselves.
I feel like I deserve 50% of my money back since I did not get the game that I was sold ( funtioning as advertised ).
Now, I dont really want (or expect) my money back, I would much rather have the game live up to its potential and work as it was intended to.
If that means officially incorporating BM into the stock game, then make that happen. I dont want to mess with swapping files and other stuff. Just give me the game I paid for.
I look forward to future patches, speaking of that whats with the patch drought? Long time no patch.
Thanks for your time.
[end of rant]
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
For me, at first, the mouse movement was delayed and I kept overshooting where I was trying to move it to...
Then I found the game running smoothly and playable...
What changed??? I disabled my second monitor...
Now, if the AI was a challenge....
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I gave up. I'm playing Sins of a Solar Empire with the Seven Deadly Sins mod now and I LOVE it. That game actually works and kicks ass. The AI is tough too.
SEV is a wreck. Ftrs dont work, supply is still broken, there are a host of other bugs and there hasnt been a patch in a LONG time and there may not be anymore. So screw this game, screw mm and screw any future SE releases.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
The programmers could make it easier for the community to fix their bugs for them.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
What the gaming world is really crying out for is a true open source strategic game similar to SE5. If the software community can craft an entire OS(ie Linux) then just think of the potential if all that creativity can be unleashed on a game. Personally I think the time has come for such a project. Either that or Malfador should release the source code for SE4 to the community.

Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I really like this game, but the long turn processing time is a HUGE problem for me. So I am playing SE4 now. One thing I really would like to see in SE5 is the possibility to choose the starting positions for each specific civilization (not ramdom).
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
Dude i agree with you MajorHavok.. the fact that alot of the major problems that can be fixed are buried w/in source just frustrates me. Here we have dedicated fans who are willing to help.. I mean, MM cant possibly make that much more from SE:V. Hell i bought it for $10 a YEAR AGO! so Christmas is coming up... Cough Aaron. And ALOT of us have been really good this year......

Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I don't know about anyone one else but I find that whilst the game could be better, it is still a great 4x game. I would still recommend it to friends, but only as long as they got FQM and BM with the it... The stock game simply doesn't cut it... Besides, I think most of us will be preoccupied with Spore anyway...
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
An open source SE4 or 5 project would be an awesome idea. Call to Power II had all kinds of issues but became outstanding after it went open source (it may still be on Apolyton.net). The only problem is that everyone has their own ideas and getting all of them to agree would be the toughtest part of the project. I've seen a really good X-Com project collapse before it got past the design doc phase (after years of trying).

Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
Man, do NOT buy Spore. Limited to 3 installs and then you have to beg EA for one more activation key. Securom will infest your system and you will be supporting a DRM that is only going to get worse for people.
Spend your money elsewhere. Try good old games www.gog.com It is currently in Beta but all games are either $5.99 or $9.99.
Also, I like SEV, but it has lost its luster knowing that it needs a lot of fixing still.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
Yow! I did not realize that about Spore.
SE5 (as well as SE4 and any other Malfador game) will always need alot of fixing. Part of this may be due to everyone having their own ideas on what's needed.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
Those screen shots were very nice.

Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I love this game.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I like the stock game a lot, and the AI may be no good, but playing vs other players is a lot more fun.
I tryed BM before and it has some good parts to it, but I don't like it that it has cut down on how many techs you can get in any one thing (I like the 100 level techs shock has).
I also play Spore and it is a good game! (or so I think)
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I'm surprised that in the 5th iteration of this game, that there are not default ship formations and orders like:
Defend Planet, where ALL assets are arranged and behave properly to defend a planet from attack.
Defend Warp Point, where ALL assets are arranged and behave properly to defend from ships exiting a warp point.
These 2 strategies are essential to simple game play, yet there are no orders or formations that were designed for these 2 simple and obvious functions.
The stock AI is woefully inadequate for a 5th iteration of this game. I understand that there will be situations where a human is better but the stock AI is terrible unless given massive bonuses.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
That is my only complaint as well. Unfortunately, you cannot mod the stock tech back in. The BM AI is optimized for the short list.

Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
Just an FYI, in terms of tech tree length, the Balance Mod doesn't differ too much from stock in the time it takes to research until maximum tech.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I'm with Cerberus. This is the most fun 4x game I've ever played. And I LOOOVE 4x games.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I just like the 100 levels the stock game has.
I even have a offline BM game going with me vs the AI and the AI is a lot better in BM then stock game.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
What is a 4X game?

Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
My 5 cents worth (damn inflation). I give this game a lot more patience then most as a player since III.
I put off the purchase for a year knowing it would be patched up for it's common practice that most games
are more less beta when released and this series has a good track record for patches and mods. My other favorite
game is the silent service sub simulator line and since Ubisoft, it has always been unplayable till at less patch
two, always very big and long time in coming as well. I've only played SEV with BM never used the stock so maybe
that helps my view on the game, so for now I'll wait for 15 and hope the AI is more aggressive and moves those big fleets
of theirs and make a real game of it. 5 cents up
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
For some reason my edit got diverted to this page as a new post? odd.

"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it /is/ a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
Thanks, I get it now.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
For those of you who are longing for an open source 4X game take a look at www.freeorion.org . From what they have posted so far this looks very promising. The only thing is that it's taking a looooong time to develop. Should be worth the wait though.
Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
I probably looked at FreeOrion a long time ago and dismissed it but I took another peek and it looks awesome. I'm downloading now. Thanks.

Re: Has anyone else run out of patience with SE5?
The game is just too slow. The turn times and movement times takes an age, even the UI is slow.
