Description
I suspect this has something to do with my system configuration; I'll list the symptoms first:
In full-screen mode using Direct3D renderer:
Game (main menu, anyway) runs but displays only a blank black screen -- no mouse cursor is displayed, no graphics, no buttons, but the game does respond to keyboard input. On hitting alt-F4 to quit, the main menu becomes briefly visible before the process shuts down.
In windowed mode using Direct3D or software, or full-screen mode using software renderer:
Splash screens and menu appear properly, mouse cursor and buttons all present and working. Hitting "New Game" or "Quick Start" takes me to the game configuration screen; hitting OK from there takes me straight back to the main menu. Hitting the "Tutorial" button does nothing. I haven't tried loading a game, I'm guessing that would also just return me to the main menu. There are no error messages and the application does not crash.
The game is updated to version 1.74 and runs via Steam. I'm not sure how old this bug is, but it has definitely been around since at least the 1.6x revisions.
System configuration:
Windows Vista SP1 64-bit, fully updated
GeForce 7800 GTX driver version 169.25 (two displays)
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (single core)
DFI LanParty nf4 SLI-DR (nForce4 chipset)
Updates
On the same system, the game works fine under Windows XP SP3 32-bit with nvidia graphics driver version 169.21.
On the same system, the game works fine under Windows Vista 32-bit with nvidia graphics driver version 175.16.
The game continues to work in Vista 32-bit after installing SP1.
Last test for the night: The game still fails on Vista 64-bit after upgrading graphics drivers to 175.16.
In Vista 64-bit, I just uninstalled Steam (along with SE5) completely, verified that the entire Steam directory under Program Files (x86) was gone, and cleaned out Malfador/Valve/Steam registry keys, then reinstalled Steam and SE5. The problem persists.
