White Flashing Screen Impeedes Play! |
Hi Guys
Im new here - just got the game off steam.
Unfortunately, I cant play it because the screen flashes white repeatedly, like someones sat infront of me doing flash photography.
I searched the forum and found quite a few other people have had this problem in the past, but none of the solutions suggested have worked for me.
I have Vista 64, a Q6600 CPU and an 8800GTS GPU. I've just tried to update my drivers again but everything was already at the latest version, and all windows updates are installed.
Ive tried different resolutions (usually use 1600 x 1200), Ive tried dropping to 16 instead of 32, and I've tried closing all other apps and background taskes.
Has anyone had any breakthroughs or patches for this problem that I might have missed? I've never had this problem with a game before so I assume it is something peculiar with SEV?

You can change the size of the window by editing the entry in HudSettings.txt, which is found in the default DATA folder.

I did not have the problem until I upgraded to 171.
I have 2 choices 1 live with it or 2 go Windowed Mode.
Unfortunately I have not found the cause yet.

I had problems in the past. But haven't seen any since 1.71 with that.
The only problem I sometimes have is that ships are the size of my screen. But that's a rare one.

I've never had the ships fill the screen. I get the occasional white flash even with the latest version but it's not really a problem. It might flash a few times but I ignore it and it usually doesn't happen again.
On the other hand I have been having trouble where the game crashes seconds before I am about to finish a multiplayer turn

The flashing screen was a big problem for me when I first installed the program and I went through most of the usual solutions.
What I have found is that the flashing seems to be produced from programs in the background updating their screens. The flashing is greatly reduced for me by 1. closing the sidebar (since I have constantly updating gadgets), 2. disabling auto-hide on the windows Task Bar, and 3. closing any programs that are updating in the background, such as a newsreader downloading files, etc. The flashing is almost eliminated. There will be a few flashes when I first load up SE5, but then they stop and hardly occur while I playing.

I agree that background programs updating their window aggravates the problem. If I use a media player for an SE5 soundtrack, I usually get flashes between tracks.

I have seen only 2 games that did the screen flashs...
SEV and StarFury... Could it be that the source program is using an old driver that has problems on a computer that runs multiple programs???
or incompatable one???

Lots of DX8 games have issues in Vista (such as crashing and not running at all).

Would upgrading the source to DX9 or DX10 fix the problem???

What kind of background programs do you have running?
