Migrating SV5 to another PC |

Hi,
I am upgrading at present and want to move my SV5 saved games and updates to another PC. 2 Questions:
Firstly, the new PC is 64bit CPU and OS (vista ultimate) - any issues with SV5?
Secondly, can I install the stock game on the new PC then overwrite the directory with the SV5 data from my old PC.
Cheers
Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
You can copy over installs of SE5 just fine. All that will be required is typing in the CD key again. You don't even need to bother making any sort of actual installation; simply copy from the old HDD to the new, run, type CD key, and you're done.
Make sure to install SE5 outside of Program Files in Vista, to avoid UAC issues. SE5 violates the basic rules of program behavior established in Win2k (probably even NT), and doesn't save user data into user folders. Thus, it is caught in the driftnet with Vista, which actually seeks to enforce the rules.
Also be aware that frame rates will be less than expected. Vista does not have any real DX8 support (used by SE5), and emulates the functions. This tends to result in worse performance.

So, Fyron, are you saying if I move my space empires directory out of Program files I can leave UAC on? I'd feel a bit better if I could do that.
Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
that would help at least. Vista is crazy like that.

Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
Just install Win XP and enjoy your 'dual core'
SE5 do not like Vista at all

Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
ok
then i will say: SE5 unlikes Vista very much
Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
Well thanks for telling me how to keep UAC on. It works fine now. I was always a bit uneasy having it off.
Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
I built a system designed to run Vista well and put XP on it anyway. I really like the performance boost.
I don't install SE5 in Progfiles either. Just thought it was a better idea to us C:\games\SEV. Hate all that long filename baggage.
Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
Yeah that IS annoying.
The path to the settings.txt file for the mods I've been playing is about 200 chars.

Not sure how well the windows boot loader handles it all though, never had to use that one. What's the one people use to "twin" (Eg boot osx and XP simultaniously) boot with? Is it Xine or something?
Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
The NT boot loader handles multi-booting Windows OSes flawlessly. It doesn't support other OSes, though. Grub is the boot loader of choice when mutli-booting Windows and *nix.
Xine is a *nix multimedia playback engine. "Boot Camp" is the poorly named boot loader provided by Apple for installing Windows on Intel Macs. If you mean running Windows in a virtual machine on Mac OS X (you can't actually run two OSes natively at the same time on the same machine), you are thinking of Parallels.
Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
Emulated DX8 layer is the primary cause of low framerates in Vista. Buggy or unsupported drivers can certainly make it worse, but DX8 provides a ceiling.

Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
What exactly is SV5?
Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
XD I think its SEV...
As for Vista
Vista is awesome. Do not deny it. I was worried about getting it
(64 bit) and every single thing works fine. As for expecting it to run better on a dual core... good luck! Im using a Quad Core and it doesnt run much better than on my Pentium 4, besides the better inturn loading and getting rid of some glitches with the help of my new Nvidia 9300 GFX card compared to my old 6600

Re: Migrating SV5 to another PC
I found with Vista that there's a security feature that queries every time you want to save something. There is no mechanism for it to work in SEV, so it can't save turns unless you turn the feature off. That's as far as I know.
I don't know about copying over a fresh install but I just copied my old install onto the new computer. Due to a new registry or something it will ask you for your security code again.
