revelation...

Soumis par pyroman le Dim, 2008-03-30 02:22 Space Empires V General

So I was at the Sins of a solar empire website...

Im not sure how long is has been out but people are already making a Battle starG mod over there and a Stargate mod and I think a star trek mod...

and it him me...Honestly do people really care about the content of these games?

Think on that for a moment...Do you see the game for its amazing content, or what you can do with it.

These games are unlike a fps in the way that it isnt all about the amazing graphics, basically thats the draw, if counter strike was made with carp for graphics it would never have taken off or someone would have made there own better graphic one

This game is all about the features, ie how you can control things, and special commands, and special components that are not done automatically for you

The content can be modded and changed at will with mods and sins of a solar empire is a perfect example, along with the mods here that change the game to be something els

My point isnt that this game is stupid and people mod it because it sucks not at all...But if you really wanted to make some cash, you would design a game engine, put a ton of time into it, much more then you should and then go to the larger companies with a demo of hey, this is what people are doing with games like SeV turning it into BSG and then show them your new engine with a demo of what BSG can look like Then do the same thing with Stargate and star trek, star wars and any other major space based fiction you can think of

Space games like these can be boiled down to the same basic thing, you design a engine and then change them a ton for each game so its not like looking at it and you can say hey these look the same and you make bank...because you dont have to reinvent the wheel every time you set down to make a game. The problem is getting a engine, setting down the basics for each game and really making the engine modular I guess is the word...and load on the visual effects and everyone would want something like that

I would love to hear what you have to think =)

I should point out that Counterstrike had some rather poor graphics compared to other HL mods of its era.

I would submit that it is only us "fanatics" that care about mods and such; the majority of players do not go online, do not download mods. Even just looking at PBW as a pseudo-random sampling, the majority of games played on it have always been with the stock, unmodified game. You could say that is a result of lowest common denominator effect, but there are plenty of players on there that wouldn't consider playing anything else.

Yah, the casual gamers, the majority of most all game markets, play the games as they are. That's why it's important to also get the stock game right.

Like Fyron says, Counter-Strike didn't really get good graphics( if they can be called such ) until after CS was 'bought' by Valve and the creators hired into the company, and that didn't happen before long after the game got popular. In other words, it was the excellent gameplay and not the graphics that made CS the most popular online FPS in history.

Well, you kinda prove my point though...when I played CS it wasn't in the very beginning, a friend got me hooked he still has a beta some place that was rather glitchy...when you were dead you could still like turn on and off lights and open doors...but thats besides the point

The features is what matters, not really content substitute gameplay with features and we are sayn the same thing. The content can be modded and changed the features stay the same unless they are just removed its the how you can control things, and special commands and the actual interface
