None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic |
I was just answering around in another thread ( scrapping or jettison enemy units as cargo .. )
when I thought about jettison cargo from planets .. ( kinda like spaceballs without the maid-bot )
which lead to the jettison facility ( which shoots stuff out of the atmosphere ) and the planetary airlock .. which need to be opened and will vent the planetary atmosphere while jettison something ..
which then ( i know i should burn some of those whiches ) led me to think .. my thats a convinient terraforming for none-atmosphere breathers ..
then after all those random thoughts a inspirational particle finally crossed my brain and lit some synapses ..
Why do races which "breathe" No Atmosphere actually care about atmospheres on other planets ?
Do the breathe at all ? Or what do they do ?
Should this not be a trait or something that enables one to colonize all kinds of atmosphere as breathable.
I know this would be some kind of munchkinesque powergaming but if expensive enough .. why not ?

Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
I don't think you could balance this trait. maybe to make it cost soo much that you had to take every other negtive trait just to afford it...

Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
Yep, Air Pressure issues. If a human was to be launched into space, aside from the freezing temperature, they'd explode and their blood would boil from the lack of air pressure. We've adapted to having a certain amount of (fairly weighty) air pressing down on us all our lives, so if we suddenly don't have that we blow up.
So, apply reverse logic - a lifeform that grew up with no atmosphere must not have any air pressure if it's to survive. Else it'll be crushed and various life-essential gases would condense.

Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
I agree, when playing a game such as this, there is a bit of reality suspension (for game play). but for game balancing, I'd skip the idea.

Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
as far as non-breather's go, don't they get the shaft? I don't think I've seen a Gas planet without any atmosphere. So they have about 2/3 of the "green" planets compared to the other breathers.
Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
how about making it a 2,500 or 3,000 point racial trait?
Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
Wouldn't work with the present interface. Atmosphere types aren't chosen on the right screen to charge for the trait.
That's just the start. This just isn't worth the trouble in terms of balance and the effort it'd take to implement it. Maybe as a sug for SE6?
Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
I believe that they get extra planets elsewhere, and the slight advantage of being able to colonise an asteroid belt more effectively, since those tiny planets/large asteroids (whatever they're emant to be) in the belts never have atmosphere

Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
Y'all have forgotten another very important aspect.
Lifeforms which have evolved under one set of atmospheric conditions might very well not only be unable to breathe another type of atmosphere, but it could very well be corrosive to them.
I'd expect that a critter that evolved without breathing anything might very well be able to ignore the fact that it suddenly has an ocean of gasses surrounding it, unless the main components of said gasses were dissolving the critter ... don't forget, oxygen is a highly corrosive gas. We breathe it and use it, but something that evolved without its influence could very well find itself melting faster than the Wicked Witch of the West did when she got wet.

Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
Personally, I've always wanted to go with the "None" atmosphere type being Unevolvable - that is, you don't have it as a choice during race creation, which accordingly renders it domed by all races.
Would be nice to have a planet type that everyone was forced to dome; and thematic to boot!

Re: None Atmosphere Breathing or Applied Logic
Only to say something about the logic, why they can not go on planets with an atmosphere. If they live on a planet without an atmosphere, than they might have serious trouble to deal with the air preasure.
