Looking for a good novel

Soumis par ernesto79 le Dim, 2008-03-09 08:16 Off-topic & Casual Conversations

Hi everyone ^^ at this time I am looking for a good sci-fi novel with focus of deep space (or space in general) exploring and maybe some first contact events.

Also interesting could be a novel more space opera like with focus on space battles

any recomendations, tips, hints or at least a push in the right direction?

Thanks everyone ^^

The Conqueror series by Timothy Zahn (series of 3 books, first contact from both perspectives - book one and two, and the finale in book 3)

Battlefield EARTH by L Ron Hubbard (disregard the fact that his 'religion' is the biggest scam to date, its a good saga about underdog human defeating galactic meanies)

Dune series by Herbert (and Anderson), especially the three prequel books: The Butterlian Jihad, The Machine Crusade and The Battle for Corrin.

I'd also recommend the Lensmen series. These books can be said to have started it all. It has elements that inspired Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, and others therein. Smiling

Honor Harrington series by David Weber and Star ship trooper, the book was great, by Robert A. Heinlein.

He ponders the dangers inherent in the advantages, and advantages inherent in the dangers. - Ts'ao Ts'ao

The Saga of the Seven Suns

by Kevin J. Anderson
( I don't know if its the correct title, because I only now the german title but should be something like this )

[Edit:] The Saga of Seven Suns .. i checked at amazon Smiling

A very good, if sometimes long series with a lot of non-bipedal races Smiling
If I ever read a book that made me think of space empires its this one.
It even got crystalline and organic races ^^

Thanks a lot everyone ^^ i read all the dune books (well most of them) and i really liked starhip troopers, so these two have to pass Smiling

I think ill check out Conqueror by Zahn, Lensman (I actually read about it a lot back in the days there was the lensman anime ^^) Honor Harington and The saga of seven suns

(one hint from each of you ^^) i hope i can find them in german

how did you like (if you read it) the mote in gods eye? by niven and pournelle? i am about to finish the second part and it was a clear step back (imho) from the first especially the continuity problems with the empires society and translation changes ( i hate when they translate a book and in the second part they change the translations)

again thanks to you all

My faves are
>entire Enders Game Series
> Entire Dark Wing series
> Entier Halo series has incredible space combat (no its not that similar to the game)
star trek of course
Captain's Glory by William Shatner was the BEST book ive ever read, only Ender's Game even comes close!

the nights dawn trilogy by peter f hamilton, very good.
and yes enders game series but didnt enjoy dark wing that much...

timothy zahn series bit slow but still good once u get into it.

david weber writes pretty much only stories about battles so he's a good choice, especialy enjoyd the "shiva option".

I recommend "Pushing Ice" by Alastair Reynolds, also another epic is The Praxis (a trilogy - this is the title of first book) by Walter Jon Williams.

alastair reynolds also wrote a series of interlinked books starting with chasm city, revelation space, and one in the middle and then absolution gap, very good stories.

praxis series had realistic space combat in it but found a bit dull, good ideas tho.

The Saga of the Seven Suns (I think they're down to six now... Laughing out loud ) and the Honor Harrington series are both outstanding. I got tired of Zahn after his first series with Grand Admiral Thrawn. The pre- and post- Dune books (with Anderson I think) were good despite the reviews. Smiling

You can always fall back to the classics...Larry Niven (Ringworld), Greg Bear (Eon), Cliff Simak (Cities), Andre Norton (Baldies). Childhood's End dealt with human evolution. Piers Anthony had the Kirlian series I think which dealt with transgalactic empires that used thought transference. The flashbacks continue...Clarke's Rama series...how about "Have Space Suit Will Travel" Smiling I just saw a third book by Peter Hamilton who wrote a decent novel dealing with humans fighting a single hive mind...the Prime.

I liked Ender's Game. The main thing that drew me in was how much Ender and I are alot alike. The ending totally blew my mind, I did not see it coming. Smiling

I'd say Webber's "In Death ground" and "Shiva Option". My copy of Shiva Option is getting worn out as I read it again every 3 or 4 months.

Night's Dawn Trilogy and Commonwealth Saga by Peter F Hamilton are good.

If you liked the Mote books you could try Footfall.

I read Ringworld recently. It was good. Gave me an idea what living on a ringworld involves.

Let's not forget Dan Simmons' Hyperion saga. There are 4 books and I took my nick from this. Isaac Asimov's Foundation series is much older but for me it remains one of the more epic works of SF. David Brin's Uplift novels are also enjoyable for some nice alien perspectives running along the human view of things.

Enders Game and Starship Troopers are the best for strategic thinking. The Moon is a harsh Mistress is often overlooked in Libertarian warfare (a contradiction in terms?) thinking.
All Heinlien is usually good. So is James p. Hogan.
