So when is SE6 coming?

Soumis par PyroMancer le Mer, 2008-03-05 05:50 Space Empires V General

Yea SE5 has been out for a while now and me like many others I'm sure are probably wondering so when is word that SE6 is the works going to come? I was a big fan of SE4 and had a lot of high hopes for SE5 but after well over a year and still a major frame rate bug issue that has plagued a lot of people is still not fixed. I have tried SE5 of 3 computers that I've had since it came out including a brand new one with the "EVIL" Vista installed cause they refuse to see ones with XP anymore Sad.

I try playing SE5 but the jerky mouse is just to frustrating and it always gets worse when you open up a menu and your always opening up menus be it for R&D, building, ship management, and etc. Then there is the fact the game seems to crash every 4-6 turns which is equally annoying considering in a large you probably issued a lot of commands on that turn and manually saving before each turn is annoying. SE4 was great the game ran smooth and was very stable it could run with a ton of other things in the background and not crash. SE5 can be the only thing running and it still crashes. When SE5 came out I gave it a lot of slack for the frame rate issue I was having but after over a year now it makes me think the issue is one within the engine itself and thus a simple patch can't fix it but requires a complete rework of the engine.

As such me and many others who find SE5 nearly unplayable have given up hope on this frame rate bug ever being fixed and so let's move on to SE6.

SE6?!?! I hope that will pass some years before SE6 come out!!! SE5 must still be fully fixed!

Think about SE4... how much time has passed from the LAST patch to SE4 and the release of SE5? A lot of time. It's only one year that SE5 has come out. Let MM fix all the bug.

I had none of the problems you describe,
some drawing issues, when I tried to watch movies while in windowed mode ( i could lay them over the systems map in se4 without a prob Smiling .
and the slow turn rates .. but none of the major issues you describe *shrugs*

I like SE5 as it is, but I am with you, when you are saying lets start from scratch,
leave SE5 be as it is and make SE6 what SE5 could have been.

take the good parts from SE:IV and SE:V and make it shine Smiling

Yeah the slow/juddery mouse thing is weird.

I used to play SEV on a slightly older machine (3 GHz, 1 GB Ram) running XP and had virtually no problems...which was nice Sticking out tongue

Then I got my laptop (Dual 1.66 GHz, 2 GB Ram) running Vista and SEV now runs a lot slower (about 6-10 fps when I open a menu) so that the mouse is pretty retarded now.

Personally I can live with the mouse being wrong, it just takes a bit of getting used to adjusting your movements so that the mouse ends up where you want it without actually seeing what you are doing. Don't really notice it anymore TBH.

Out of interest how long was it between the last SEIV patch and SEV being released?

The problem with Vista and SE5 is that Vista has to map all SE5's direct-X v8 commands to Direct-X v10, which just kills the FPS. The only thing I've found that helps is turning off the smooth edges of font setting.

Lets not rush into SE6 just yet. Look at what rushing did to SE5, SE4, etc.

I agree with putting any SE VI on self for now.

After all, wouldn't it be better to get all the new stuff in SE V to work well, before moving that to SE VI?

As for bugs, I occationally get end of turn hanging bug, that is the only critical one I've met. Others are just minor annoyances.

Never seen mouse problems with SE V at all.

Goodness... going to SE 6 now would be the worst move possible from my view. Finish SE 5 so modders can freely flex their muscles around (oh and patch the bugs too). Then while modders constantly generate new content, SE 6 can be slowly worked on after training a team of programmers.

Personally, I'm giving SE V another 2 years before I think about modding etc - mostly because that's how long it'll take for me to finish education. Even then, I may end up distracted elsewhere so SE V can have all the time it needs to mature as far as I'm concerned.

Uh.. you do know that Vista has DirectX 9.0L, right? There won't be mapped anything to DX10, because it simply isnt downwards compatible. Thats what DX 9.0L is for.

SEV is like a good wine, it matures over time. the difference being that it won't improve just by lying there, but by steadily ironing out all the bugs and adding better AI. It took me a year after initial release to start prefering SEV to the gem SEIV was (and still is). The mods are also maturing, so that was another big factor for me to start liking SEV. As I'm now setting my first paces on PBW, this game is becoming even more enjoyable. I don't see why an SEVI would be a good idea at this point, unless the souce coding for SEV were really broken or too limitative from a conceptual point of view.

Okay okay, I rephrase my statement.

Lets work out the major bugs of SE:V, include some more stuff and feed the modders, the heart and soul of the SE Series. Let it mature for some time.

But start with SE:6 ( I just thought, how will the short version of Space Empires 10 look like ^^ ), no anouncements, hell no, not even a publisher ( as soon as there is money involved people who should just shut up want to have a say too ) read the wishlists thouroughly, remember the bugs, remember the good stuff of older versions. Make design documents,
start designing from front-end to source, ask the modding gurus .. involve them in the process

And never forget .. a great interface can make a crappy game fun.
a crappy interface ruins the best idea.

My greatest wish for every game is a simple, yet intelligent interface.
Space Empires would greatly profit from such a thing.

So start designing now .. announce in about two years .. and don't release before Kwok and Fyron say so.

P.S.: does anybody know dwarf fortress ?

Don't wait, just start modding. Nothing is ever "finished" in the real world, including the OS your running on. Don't wait for your "education" to be "finish", because it never does. I can tell you the fresh grads that I've interviewed don't know much about anything *unless* they actually did a few projects during university. I'm not talking about school projects - I'm talking about volunteer stuff, open sourced, script engines, ANYTHING other than school projects. You'll learn a lot more on a project than any course, and I don't care where you go to school.

Working with other people helps, because they will add the timeline/code quality pressure on you. Working with yourself on the first project never works out well because you don't have peer reviews on the code.

Good luck Psieye, but whatever you do, don't wait for make excuses, because nothing is ever finished in software.

Ah... bad word choice of me: 'education' is misleading. I'm a Postgrad, currently in charge of monitoring a few-million dollars' worth of custom-ordered (and frail) hardware. On top of that, I'm already in a project to make our own game virtually from scratch with a different group. This I try to juggle with having a few time-consuming hobbies, a mountain of data organisation for personal purposes, being an archivist/data organiser for online voting tournaments and learning a new language. I know what you mean about projects giving highly valuable experience (I've been in a few when I was an Undergrad) but it would be suicidal to embark on SE V modding right now - even if it was 100% pristine perfect.

Yeay, I had that crashing problem for a while too, but when I down;oaded that last patch, 1.66 or whatever, It hasen't crashed on me since. The only other thing I've found really bothersome is when you can't see the components when placing them on a ship. That drives me nuts. I'm not surprised the game slows down on me after 500 turns, so, thats why I'll only play 10 turns a day. I think it will be a while before SE6 comes out though. Just look at the request list (which I've summarised twice now), its long. Though not many people have said anything about the next game having a better frame rate or technical stuff like that. Most of it has been feature oriented stuff.

I was referring to my situation, with my circumstances - with little to do with the actual state of SE V. Kwok has been doing this for years so his circumstances are more suitable. Please do not take single statements out of all context.

UI changes would probably appear, if at all, in a SE5 Gold or Deluxe. Smiling
