I though I'd post some of the ship designs that I've used in the Nebula Rising game.

Re: Nebula Rising: Declassified ship designs

The first military ships built by the Nilith Imperium had the role of scout ships. The could be recognised by the prefix SS, eg the SS-Hoktar, but its design name was Marovoay. Their design was finished in 2400.8 and the first actual ship was built in 2401.0.

They were first used as lone scouts to survey unexplored systems, but later they were assigned to fleets to provide sensor reports. There were several upgardes to this type of ship over the next 2 years, but it was final pulled from construction with the development of new weapons in 2402.7. In total 10 were built.

The Zan-En was the Nilith's first dedicated attack ship. Designed in 2401.5 and built in 2401.7. It saw action in the first assaults on the Moh-Lat and Rav-Nar systems. Again, it was pulled from construction at the same time as the scout ships. This attack ship was designed to be used in groups and always with the support of a Marovoay and Paarl-AiTak, a point defense ship. 34 Zan-En frigates were built between 2401.7 and 2402.8.

The Paarl-AiTak was a point defense support ship used to back up the Zan-En class ships, as they couldn't carry enough point defense weapons. 13 were built by the year 2402.7.

The next attack ship design had a bigger hull and it tried to combine the role of attack ship and point defense ship. It was not built in large numbers, as a new type of weapon was soon invented. Only 8 were built, all being finished in the year 2402.8. Again, this ship saw action in the two Nilith combat zones of Moh-Lat and Rav-Nar.

Please note that some original designs have been lost and that the nearest design to the original has been used. Also some designs even though they were nolonger in construction, were updated every few months. The record of ships built is accurate up to the year 2404.4, in this year the Nilith stopped giving names to their ships(they also stopped writing them down on paper).

The next line of ship designs were brought about by the invention of the Anti-proton beam which replaced the D.U.C. as standard armament on all Nilith combat ships.

The old Marovoay scout ships were replaced with Wad Medani class scout ships. These ships continued with the same role, that of providing sensor scans to fleets. Construction dates from 2403.2 to 2405.7.

Ben-Im class frigates replaced the old Zan-En attack ships. Between the years of 2403.0 and 2404.3 a total of 38 were built.

To replace the point defense ships with the new weapon system the Baalh-pl was comissioned. 16 being build between the same period as the Ben-Im frigates.

Bden-ak was the destroyer that had quickly replaced the older Dakar destroyers, but it still kept the role of attack ship/point defense ship. 28 were built up to the year 2404.4.

The very first light cruisers were finished in 2403.0. They were designed as ships to counter current enemy designs...that was to have as many weapons as the enemy but more armor. The Lusaka did not prove an effective front line atttack ship. These ships saw service until 2405.5, though in the year before it was withdrawn, none were built.

In 2403.5 attempts were made to make the Nilith light cruisers more effective and so the Kaduna was born. This new Light cruiser design took advantage of recent advances in certain areas and added, one more APB, a control computer and a solar sail. There was a slight improvement over its predecessor. These ships were found in Nilith fleets in the central combat zone and they saw some combat action against the Mithrak empire in the north of the quadrant. The last Kaduna was built in 2405.7.

Another attack ship to be born from the Lusaka was the Sr-Bnrak. The prefix Sr- meaning that the ship had shields. There were designs for all ships to use shields, but the Sr-Bnrak was the only to be build in significant numbers. Its combat effectiveness was somewhat doubtful, and the last to be produced was in 2405.7.

Around the the year 2403.5 the Nilith needed some long range support ships for their fleets, so two ships were designed with this role. The Conakry and the Msyut, the second being the bigger of the two. The combat role of these ships was to hang back behind the front line attack ships and launch missiles at the enemy, be they ships or planets. They saw combat mostly in the Rav-Nar system against Xel'Naga and were the only ships that managed to make it back to Nilith space after the defeat there.

Enemy advancments in point defense and problems with targeting saw to it that these ships were soon scrapped from production lines all over the Nilith Imperium. There are however, quite a few still in service due to their combat survivability.

The Carkock SAX was designed around the same time as the missile ships above, it was not however built in any great numbers for several reasons. The construction time then was about 6 months on a planet shipyard and longer on a starbase yard, this did not fit in with the Nilith military tactics of the time. The early Nilith tactics were that of swarming the enemy with a great number of small ships, and simply presenting too many targets for the enemy weapons to destroy. This tactics had proved effective in the first engagments against Myr'sadat Fleets and colonies and the Nilith wished to continue this trend, So only a very few of these cruisers were build and they acted as command ships for the fleets.

This proved to be a mistake as the enemy produced light cruisers and cruisers in quite large numbers and were able to beat back the swarms of smaller Nilith ships. These losses provoked a change in Nilith military tactics and stalled the Nilith offensive, which in the end led to the loss of the Moh-Lat and Rav-Nar systems.

Wow, that was an interesting read Sticking out tongue Perhaps I should include my own chronicle at some time.

[qoute]
The old Marovoay scout ships were replaced with Wad Medani class scout ships. These ships continued with the same role, that of providing sensor scans to fleets. Construction dates from 2403.2 to 2405.7.

I always wondered what the use of those ships were. I did notice the difference of all your ships missing sensors, while my own have been equipped. That must be why you are often surprised by cloaked fleets.
I do have occasional scanners out there though. But they are equipped with Tachyon scans and long range analyses tools.

[qoute]Nilith tactics were that of swarming the enemy with a great number of small ships, and simply presenting too many targets for the enemy weapons to destroy. This tactics had proved effective in the first engagments against Myr'sadat Fleets and colonies and the Nilith wished to continue this trend, So only a very few of these cruisers were build and they acted as command ships for the fleets.

I remember this and was utterly surprised by the effectiveness of swarming. In fact, the shiite pulled the same trick just recently. Only with support of a battleship fleet.
This caused a severely backlash in my empire. Your assaults were stunningly effective here.

Yes, some Nilith fleets did get surprised by cloaked fleets...that happened in the Rav-Nar system, when the fleet was regrouping after attacking a Mry'Sadat colony two fleets of Xel'Naga just appeared out of nowhere and destroyed them. This was perhaps a two part mistake, one the fleets did not carry ships with Tachyon sensor and second the Nilith did not know that ships could be cloaked with just armour(my mistake...I learned fast from that one!).

Myrath...forgot to say in the post above, that would be cool if you did post your old ship designs.

The Bobo-Diou SAX was the first battleship designed and built by the Nilith Imperium. Again, between the periods of 2404.1 to 2405.7 very few were built and those that were had the same role as the Crakock SAX cruiser, a fleet command ship. Compared to enemy cruisers of the time, this battleship was not heavily armed, but it was quite hard to destroy, due to all the shield generators and armor. The Nilith ship designers and military learnt a lot from fielding such ships, and it was the base that led to the present day(2407.9) battleships.

Well, as the Nilith are building their chronicle, I will add a few of my own ships that follow the same timeline.

Before I started Nebris, I decided that I wanted to use a new weapon system that I hadn't used before. This system would be the Null Space weapon. I enthousiasticly started my research in that field but quickly found myself disappointed in it's effectiveness.

In any case, I started with rapid expansion. I had taken the Acient Race feet, so I could see the entire galaxy. This allowed me to select a number of chokepoints for my empire. Eventually it turned out that I could go much further and faster than thought before.

My first ships intended to take foothold near my intended borders were the Roadkill Class frigates. They were nothing more then that too. Roadkill... I like to start with missiles and maximum range warfare. This makes for nice survivability in the beginning of the game.

Some 40 Roadkills were built; Most received several upgrades and were piled up at the Mithrak and Xel'Naga borders. Some ships even reached the central system of Kintara. But that truely was at the very edge of their range.

After some time we advanced to using destroyer technology. The first line of destroyers were the Wee'Jas class ships. They were basicly the bigger brothers of the Roadkills. This ships saw some combat in Kintara, after their long voyage there.

The last Wee'Jas class vessels unlocked Beam weapons. Most important too was the unlocking of level 5 engines to save costs.

Now, around 2403.5 I made some interesting developments. I finally unlocked my nullspace weaponry and light cruisers. I thought I was ready now to do some serious damage. So I started producing the RoadMaster class Frigates and the Imperial Skull class Frigates. I thought they would be great ships. Unfortunatly they were far less effective then first thought.

Notice that the cruisers are using more advanced engines because of the large routes my ships had to follow

I was growing more confident at that time and started to produce cruisers which made it to the front. Long production times were a bit of a problem... but things were looking up.
It was also the time when the 'LCR Shiken' was introduced. It was intended as a 'ship of the line' kind of thing, relying on beamweapons. I've always been a fan of light cruisers..

The first shiken was built in 2404.0, and upgraded version were still produced in 2405.0. A milestone was reached in 2404.9 when we perfected armor technology to level 20. Only 23 shikens were built.

In 2404.something I noticed the larger numbers of nilith ships and decided that something had to be done. This saw the birth of 2 new cruiser designs that were supposed to end the Nilith threat for once and for all. Some would be sent to the Mithrak border, but they really were no threat. The Mithrak and myself were working on a technological exchange, mostly to stop the Shiite advancement upon Mithrak space. You will notice the exotic meson blasters on the Shuriken first models. This was an import from the Mithrak. These cruisers were also developed to counter the Shiite invasion forces. But things looked grim for the Mithrak. Several things had gone in the whole treaty thing, so my ships couln't enter Mithrak space until it was far too late. The Shurikens have been ship of the line for quite some time.

Now, around 2404.5 I lost a huge number of ships. I was swarmed by nilith frigates who really ripped my more advanced ships apart. Lightcruisers arrived later to take care of the problem, in combination with Xel'Naga help. But it showed a fundamental weakness in my armies. Just haveing big guns doesn't work. You also need a lot of ships!

Around this time the Nilith placed an interesting article on the boards referring to a victory over 'the cats'. This inspired the name of a new class of frigates which was rushed into mass production. The birth of 'The Kitten'.
There are several models and many MANY roadmasters and roadkills were also upgraded to kittens. But the main production cycle looked something like below here.
The kittens saw service until the GulfCats arrived in 2406.5. Some 141 kittens were built in an attempt to counter the swarms of Nilith.

Around 2405.2 we were sure of our technological superiority over the Nilith. Research in historic files show the vast diferences. The main problem though was still that the nilith were fighting near their frontdoor.. and we had to travel a zillion lightyears to make it to the front.

Around this time the empire was also suffering. The Mithrak were about to fall... and the Shiite were closing in fast. 2 long range wars cannot be held up long for any empire... This time also saw a major shift in policy. The Nilith were not a real threat with their technology. The real threat were the Shiite. Their large fleets of cruisers of strong design were getting closer.

~To be continued!
