Vista and SEV

Soumis par Krelek1000 le Ven, 2008-02-08 00:40 Space Empires V General

Hi, I am a noobie here so please forgive any issues that I do not know about...

Anyways, I recently d/ld Space Empires V from Direct2Drive. The problem that I am running into is that the Text on the screens do not display in any of the windows or the popup. If I play in Windowed then they display when my mouse is no longer on the screen...

Is this a known issue? How can I get it resolved?

Thanks
Krel

I can not say for shure but one of the big complaints I have herd is that Vista Security does not always play nice with non-vista programs.

To solve this look at Vista's security settings.

Help! I have been assimilated

welcome krelek1000.
i will ask a stupid question 1st. you do have most recent patches and drivers? when i 1st got vista i couldn't get SEV to run on it. but once i downloaded patches and drivers i no longer had problems playing on my system. then again i am using the 64bit version and i know drivers are different.

Desdinova,

I regularly update my drivers (windows update sucks) and since I d/led it from Direct2drive, it came as v 1.66. I will try again to see if they need to be updated through ATI and stuff... I will let you know what is happening...

ForesterSOF,

What security settings should I look at? There are a lot of things that can cause issues I heard but I do not know where to start when disabling them...

Thanks

Well I just installed v 8.1 of the catalyst software in my computer. Tried the game, still has the same issues. Text for some reason will not display when the mouse is on the screen...

Any other suggestions?

Ok... I think I got a work around. I set the setting to SAFE mode and that allows for the text to display. Only problem is that if there is a popup, the hud display disappears. So I went into the options and turned the popup help off.

Now everything should display alright! I will try and let you guys know what I find!

Thanks for all your help!

Well it sort of worked and it didn't. Some screens are not showing up at all?

Should I get another video card or something?

Okay I can finally close this. I found a place by one of the folks here on troubleshooting SEV and it seems to work.

I changed my resolution to 1024x768 and it works fine now... Everything shows up...

Here is the link to the page that gave me some ideas...

http://www.malfador.com/Se5notes.html

Hopefully anyone who has trouble and is reading this, try changing the resolution to the one specified for the games... It WORKS!

SE5 generally supports any standard 4:3, 16:9, 16:10, etc., resolution, so long as it is larger than 1024x768. Maybe there is a new bug with ATI drivers? You should get in contact with Malfador (se5 at malfador dot com) about it..

Here's an easy way to get around most of the security issues with Vista that I seem to have with games, and also with codecs and plug-in installation programs for other programs (Like IE and IrfanView) that I use. It's simple really.

1) Open up Windows (not Internet) Explorer, and browse to the installation program. (Probably only the one file from a service liek Direct2Drive... don't know about the service personally)
2) Right click on the file to bring up the popup context menu.
3) Select 'Run as Administrator'
4) The install program should run like normal, but it should now let it do the installation things that it wouldn't before.

Most times if I've had an installation fail, or the application just acting weird like Krelek, this method will work to fix it... without compromising the native security features in Vista. Sure, it's a pain, but once used to it, I do it with everything.
It seems that even though I am the sole user of my system, and I installed the Vista from the Cd... I am NOT the big head Administrator. This method lets the program install with those rights that I don't seem to have.

Hope this helps someone...

User accounts should never have had root-like privileges in Windows in the first place... the fixed security model was a long time in coming. Granted, its going to take more refinement until everything becomes as fluid as Unix/Linux/BSD, but its getting there.

The main problem I have with my vista install and SE5 is an excessive amount of time to load the ship list window. Besides that, I don't see any other problems besides occasional white flashing when a pop-up window opens behind SE5. Does anyone else with Vista have the long delay with the ship list?

I've spoke with MM about it, but no solutions so far. This on my dual core Laptop with a Nvidia card - what general config are you running?

Sempron 3200, GeForce 8600GT, Vista 64bit, 2GB RAM.
Enough for medium details (at least) in most games and databases with thousands of records.

i havent played in a while, i would like to do away with the popup screen idea altogether and just make it so you change screens completely to see different items. maybe that will help with load times, since wont have to keep the mainscreen as well as each popup. i did have load times with the ship and colonies screens.
