Infuriating Problem

Soumis par apw2 le Jeu, 2008-01-10 19:37 Space Empires V General

Following recent advise i installed unnamed's latest AI improvement mod, but i've had a big problem with it. At first it runs perfectly, the computer seems much smarter and is actually playing better than i am. But my problem is this:

I know that with the improved AI the computer will take longer each turn per AI empire, its about 5 times longer, but this i don't mind. What my problem is that at some point early on in the game, once i've ended my turn and i am waiting for the computer to finish moving his own empires, at some point, when it starts the turn of one of the AI empires, the game will simply freeze. First time it did this it was when i had 18 computer empires in the game, originally i thought it was because i had too many players, so i reduced the number to 8 computer empires, yet the same thing is still happening!
I'm on about turn 10 and it won't get passed player 8's turn. So this is seriously annoying me, i don't know how to fix this without removing the mod altogether, which i don't want to do as the AI is pathetic without it.

Can anyone help me with this? Pretty please? With sugar on top.

are you using any custom shipsets? sometimes they can be a problem, can be with just one particular shiptype that ai just suddenly achieved.

Try setting the guilty player to human controlled and see if you can figure out what it is doing that it shouldn't be.

Are you sure you got the latest version of the unnamed mod? A problem like this has been reported before, and there was a small patch made for the mod to fix it. Check out this thread; it sounds a lot like what you're seeing.

"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it /is/ a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.

Yeah i am using custom ship sets, most of the star trek ones lol. I've played a game with them before and never had any trouble with them.
I have Version 1.08b without FQM Download installed (obtained from his wiki page). I've read the post you pasted but all unnamed mentions is that he's created a patch, however after looking at his link i cannot see any patch mentioned. Just versions 1.07 and 1.08.

How do i set a computer player to be a human player mid way through a game?

You'll have to update the AI for the custom shipset empires then. (just copy one from a standard empire into the custom one)

Re: Infuriating Problem

Which files are these then?
By custom ones do you mean (terran for example):
Terran_AI_DesignNames.txt
Terran_AI_General.txt
Terran_AI_Main.txt
Terran_AI_Speech.txt
Terran_InvConfiguration_slots.txt
Terran_Ships_XFileClasses.txt
Terran_main_script.csf
Terran_setup_script.csf

Do i simply change their names to say Borg_AI_Speech.txt or Breen_AI_Speech.txt and copy them over their older AI versions?
I would have thought that each empire would have had different scripts etc...

Hey apw2,

Sorry to hear your having problems, lets see if we can figure it out. First, what version are you running of the actual game? 1.66 fixed the old problem of the game freezing at end of turn (with blue bar about 1/3 the way across). I took the link down from that fix because updating the game version fixes it. So if you are running 1.58 or something update and let us know what happens.

Second, if the game is freezing during a specific empire's turn, what empire is it. Whichever race it is should indicate where the problem is. If its a custom shipset AI, versus my AI, versus Corellon's AI, etc.

Third, check your private messages. I'm sending you an email address to send the save game to.

Re: Infuriating Problem

The version of the game i play on is 1.66 with your version 1.08b ID mod.
The race that it actually crashes on is a randomly generated race by the computer when i created the game, so the models it uses should work ok as they were originally some of the ones that came with the game.
When it freezes, its just as turn 8 is starting its go. The green loading bar doesn't even appear.
The map i'm playing on was generated by the map editor SE5MapCreatorMC (which i got from here), was one of their test maps with my own modded system on (because i'm not very good at the game yet).
The modded races that i'm using are the borg, 8472, breen, cardassian, dominion, FedTNG, klingon and romulan. But tehy all seem to be working ok. The empire that it crashes on is called the Norak - they have been using intelligence quite a bit in this game, so perhaps the problem is intel related like the previous games - although since they are the ones using the intel i don't see why it would effect them.

I did alter two other things, i made the dreadnought and baseships capable of supporting a heavier load of systems on them. These seem to work ok as i have built numerous baseships without any trouble.
If the map, added races and modded ships work fine then it must be to do with this norak race.

btw, whats the e-mail address? Are you sending it to my inbox on here?

Hey apw2,

Sorry, got distracted by work. Anyways, you should now have a message in your inbox on this site with my email.

Offhand it sounds like the Norak race (as you concluded). Corellon's scripts govern that race, so I will pass the information and save game on to him. In addition I'll try and take a look tonight or tomorrow and see what the problem is. If you are really iching to play you can run a turn and let it process for a long time (10 minutes or so). In my past versions my AIs would occassionally run into infinite loops that didnt exit for several minutes, but would eventually run the turn (since fixed for my AIs). This may or may not be the problem in this case with Corellon's AI (or it may not even be a problem with his AI). Anyways, I'll look into it.

Everyone,

Also, I have started a forum dedicated to the Unnamed Mod over at spaceempires.net (linked below).

http://home.spaceempires.net/forum-94.html

In the future it may be beneficial for people to post unnamed mod specific issues over there. Better chance that other modders or myself see the post if we dont see it right away on these forums.

Ah right thanks, i'll send you that e-mail now.
If the game does enter into a loop than sadly its not a 20 minute one - that i could probably cope with, i've tried leaving this for over 2 hours and still no luck.

Hey unnamed, that replacement file you sent me, when you said the AI might have a few problems with it as its a different script, does that mean the AI might not build certain things or something? So far the noraks have been working fine, but the game freezes once i've ended my turn at its "processing players turns" the blue bar stops maybe 1/4 of the way across. Which i find a bit odd as i thought the 1.66 patch fixed that problem Sad
Fortunately it doesn't do this every turn, maybe every one in three turns.

Have just notice something somewhat odd. While its processing the computers turns, it says player 17. There is no player 17. When i save the game it says 17 players as well, yet ingame i can see the scores of everyone, there are only 9-10 empires. I know these new empires are coming from planets rebelling due to intelligence attacks, but surely not 7 planets in one turn?

Re: Infuriating Problem

Soumis par unnamed le Dim, 2008-01-13 12:28

Hey apw2,

Yeah it may handle the ships or build everything the same, is what I meant. So when it stops 1/4 the way across, you just reload and run again and it works? I've heard of this before, and I was unable to find anything on my end. I sent an example to Aaron but never heard anything back (I think I did anyways, I sent a couple problems to him at the same time). Since its during the blue "processing players turn" phase it shouldnt be anything to do with the mod, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm going to try and do more to track down these problems, so I'll update if I learn anything new.

Everyone Else,

If you have the same problem apw2 had (specific race freezing the game), send me a pm, and I'll send you a replacement file.

Re: Infuriating Problem

Soumis par apw2 le Dim, 2008-01-13 14:11

Think i may have figured out what is causing this blue loading bar problem.
All the empire seem to be using large amounts of intelligence per turn. This has resulted in numerous new empires to be born. I've found out that when i save the game it shows all the empires that still or have existed during the game. Which is 19 at the minute, in the score comparison page it shows the 10 surviving empires, scored from 1-9 and then the bottom empire is at 19th place. Not entirely sure why its not set at 10th, but i don't think thats the problem. What is the problem i've noticed is that from looking under the score comparison page the 19th empire has no planets and no ships, so really next turn the empire will be removed from the score board and listed as a defeated empire.

I think the problem comes from the game trying to remove this defeated empire, i've only just noticed that the previous times to game has frozen on the blue loading bar has been when one of these new empires has been defeated, and only required for the end of turn for them to be removed as a existing empire.

At least i think this is the problem, if i can manage to get passed this current point i'll keep an eye out. Although i've no idea how to fix the problem Sad

Hey apw2,

Send me another savegame, I'll look into this new problem also. I have an idea or two about what it may be, but no promises I can help.

I'm no tech and this may not be your problem but its usually mine, maybe there is a simularity, who knows. I use the same mod as you w/shipsets (all the startrek ones available).

My comp will sometimes freeze up like yours does, sometimes it shows a move path for planets ( lol, no kidding), will show pictures of components when i click where the picture should be in the news column, when the news column shows no picture, when i double click the news column to go to that unit i get errors saying they cant find SE5 at all, even while i'm doing a turn, lol, whole fleets disappear for a turn, then reappear mysteriously, lol, for just a few things that happen. Then the next morning the game runs perfect, no probs, then the next day it comes back for a day or 2 , then perfect, lol.

Then finnally i decided to post abut it but stopped becuase there was something i had not tried or noticed, like i said this is stupid, but here goes, lol, i rebooted comp after about 20mins of being off, and the game ran perfect. I noticed if i rebooted then played again immediately i would get the same problems sometimes and sometimes not.But if i let the comp stay off for a while, it worked fine. My comp was running hot. lol, and this works everytime for me, go figure. I'm sure if i run scan disk it will happen even less, etc. Even though i never had probs with other games, and only this one, it cures it evreytime. mine was a comp issue not a game issue. I'm sure its not your problem, but just thought i might mention it, hope you get yours fixed.

heh, i've had that sort of problem with other games, but usually ones that require more computer bandwidth. I replaced the modded files with the original ones, and then the game worked again for a few turns before the problem returned. No idea whats causing it, my laptop doesn't get very warm (new harddrive) so i'm pretty sure its not that. Just gonna wait and see what unnamed says, see if his theories prove correct. (I hope so!)

Re: Infuriating Problem

Hey Everyone,

Has anyone seen "Processing Player 21 Turn" since version 1.66 . I ask because I have one theory that the game is not handling more than 20 players correctly (or some other arbitrary number). In which case the intelligence attacks creating new empires may be crashing the game somehow. This would coincide with high intelligence games and more often when there are already close to 20 empires. Also some turns would still work if reloaded because the new empire wouldnt always be created.

Hmm interesting theory, i don't believe i have seen player 21 before, my current game is on 18 empires, in the past turns i've usually seen 1-2 new empires emerge per turn. Could be why my game doesn't work even after i've replaced the modded files with the original since the effects of intelligence will remain the same.

Re: Infuriating Problem

Soumis par unnamed le Lun, 2008-01-14 11:25

Thats correct, intel would be the same. Stock AIs tend to use less offensive intel attacks which may slow down the problem and make it seem like the mod is the problem when really the mod would just increase the tendencies of the problem. If this is indeed the problem I have a file at home which will fix it. ( the old fix which made intel attacks switch planets alliegence to the attacking empire instead of creating new empires). I will send you a copy tonight of this file, and try to run some of my own tests tonight as well.
