New player - Question about maximum storage

Soumis par vbidez le Lun, 2007-12-24 20:32 Space Empires V FAQs

I've just started my very first game, and I'm trying to figure everything out. One question that I have right now is about the Maximum Storage for the planet and excess production.

At the beginning of the game, my Treasury window says that I am currently producing +29,000 Minerals per turn, that I currently have 53,600 Minerals in storage, and that I have a Maximum Storage of 50,000 Minerals. Now disregarding the fact that I already have more than the maximum, which I am assuming is just a first turn oddity, my question is this.

I started a game with the Finite Resources option selected, so my planet only has a limited number of Minerals available. Now, if my planet already contains the maximum number of Minerals that it is capable of storing, and I am producing a net postive amount of Minerals each turn, is that excess production wasted? Is there a way to not produce excess Minerals if they are just going to be wasted?

Thanks in advance for the help.

As far as i know, yes this is wasted excess materials. You can apply points to your research dept to storage and it will increase your capacity to store more but u will have to upgrade your existing storage facilities for it to take effect. Hope this helps, and merry x-mas.

Not exactly sure what the Finite option does. However, from what I have seen you do want to keep all the resources somewhat in the black so-to-speak. If you go into the red, it will then use what you have in storage to make up the difference. And yes the rest is simply lost. However, you will also note from turn to turn, as you construct, the amount of surplus will of course vary. If you have 10 planets doing nothing at all, more surplus, because they aren't using what you are producing. But if you suddenly go to full out ship building on those 10, it will drop dramatically, and could even go into the red.

I haven't figure out beyond trial and error, the numbers there for balancing purposes. Like how big of a storage do you really need? Can I construct on all my worlds at once without going horribly into the red and shutting down my empire? Has been pretty much trial and error for me, and not really sure even if the numbers are available in game besides looking after turning on what you want to construct that turn prior to clicking the next turn button.

As far as how I use it, I use the storage as a buffer to get things done and just try and time it so I do not run out of storage prior to completion. You can also place planets on hold to make sure you have the resources available from storage for your priority builds, then remove the hold when it is safe to do so.

On the flip side, if the Finite limits the total production during a game on a planet... Hmmm. That would be a balancing act between how much you use, vs store, and not wanting to go too much over. Assuming that is the case. Not sure if you can 'turn off' resource production without removing facilties.

I likewise am new to SEV and am trying to learn the ins and out. I used to play SEIV often with the setting of finite. What worked then should work now as well. Yes, those minerals produced in excess of storage are totally lost. So, hide what you can. Design the most resource intensive ship/Wp you can, with the idea of scrapping them later. granted, you don't get 100% of the resources back, but some is better than none. This can also provide a safety net when you kick planets into high gear to create fleets. When maintenance cost surpass production, you can cut it back with a non-crucial scrap and adjust your resource productions to maintain a viable balance. At least that's the plan, but I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work in this edition. I also like give myself some starting tech points, and storage is one of the areas I spend some on.

On facility upgrades:

Huh? I know in #4 this was required, but so far in my game all my built facilities have auto-upgraded (without cost or effort. IE: my level 2 research facilities magically turn into level 3s as soon as I finish the next tech level.) Have not figured THAT one out yet.

Zippyriver, the only possible way that could happen is if you have some Minister on that is doing it for you - by default this is off so you would have had to turn it on. Otherwise, this would not happen ever, you would always have to manually upgrade all facilities.

Hi guys,
Finite production if beeing used, reduces the planet value each turn untill planet runs out of that type resource.
The larger the value the longer it lasts.

If you want to reduce your wastage in resources then go to Cargo Orders button IN bottom right window then click on scrap cargo button.
This is where to delete facilities and planet side cargo from your planet.
Remember though to replace your facility with research, intelligence or other production facility to replace those you delete.

You could also research cargo storage and upgrade your facilities there by reducing your wastage to?

Hope this helps

Crystalline races rule in finite games. Smiling
