Direct Play online

Soumis par Souljourner le Lun, 2007-12-10 16:49 Space Empires V General

Sorry if this is too simple a question, but I don't actually have the game in hand yet. Is it possible to set up a multiplayer game online and take turns without everyone online and running the game at the same time? Also, I assume that you can play this online remotely - i.e. everyone from their own homes. Can someone point me to NAT/Router setup documents, or just tell me what ports need to be opened/forwarded?

Thanks ahead of time,
-Nate

You can set up a game through email, so that nobody has to be online at the same time.

Can you explain how play by email works? The only experience I have with PBE is in RPGs where you just explain what you're doing in text. I presume this is some automated way to submit your turn to the rest of the players?

Basically. One person hosts the game, and the game will automatically send out emails to each player during game setup and during each turn, telling them to take their turn. After each player takes their turn, emails will be sent back to the host, who will actually process the turn, ending the turn. Then the emails will be sent out again, repeating the process until the game ends.

There are 2 other options: Play by Web (server) and "Manual" file moving.

PBW only allows simultaneous turns, but it does the turn processing for you so nobody needs to 'host' (after the first turn of setting up).

"Manual" file moving is what I use - use whatever data transfer means you like (IM data transfer, FTP, email, Virtual LAN, whatever). All options essentially are moving save files around - a new save file is made after each player's turn.

Depending on whether it's simultaneous or sequential turns, either everyone sends their save file to the host (in which case, you're sending a record of all your orders this turn) or a save file to the next player (then you're sending a save of what happened on your turn).

Note: Get used to playing without Tactical Combat, as you can only do Strategic Combat in Multiplayer (which is why it doesn't matter if nobody is online at the same time).

Playing Touhou games (Go to this Wiki if interested. No, nobody else is that good/insane as that replay). No rush for SE

Is there a way to switch modes in the middle of a game? Say we're playing directly at a LAN party and then want to move to PBE after the LAN party. Sounds like we'd have to make sure to exclude tactical combat from the start to make it compatible.
