FQM 5.00 Beta 12 Released

FQM 5.00 Beta 12 has been released. This release features lots of changes to stellar abilities, fancy new blackbody black holes, and organic infestation systems. Make sure to upgrade to the latest Multimedia Pack!

Version History:
1. Changed - Tweaked system counts of Old and Ancient quadrants.
2. Added - Dying quadrant type, with even more dead or dying stellar phenomena than Ancient quadrants.
3. Added - There are now 5 types of Asteroid Belt system.
4. Changed - Standard, Binary and Trinary systems now have between 1 and 3 storms. Quaternary and Quintuple systems have between 2 and 4 storms.
5. Added - Ringed planet textures now match other planets. Requires an update to your Multimedia Pack installation.
6. Added - Organic Infestation systems, with textures based on the SE4 infestation system. Venus fly trap image formated for SE5 by David Gervais.
7. Changed - Black hole accretion disks are now colored according to blackbody temperature calculations. The effect is vaguely similar to the swirling warp points. They also have animated radiation jets. Wizardry courtesy of Suicide Junkie.
8. Changed - Made text of Sight Obscuration abilities in StellarObjectTypes.txt more clear. Reduced cloak level from 16 to 10.
9. Removed - Stars can no longer have the pointless "Star - Unstable" ability.
10. Added - Stars can now have system-wide effects.
11. Fixed - As per the upcoming SE5 patch, the two missing Unique Ruins techs (Power Leech and Shield Implosion) are now placed on planets.
12. Changed - Made Protostar Storm abilities more interesting.
13. Changed - Asteroids only have 10% chance to have a Sight Obscuration ability, rather than 100%.
14. Changed - Revamped StellarAbilityTypes.txt. Now, multiple abilities of the same type are generally consolidated into a single entry.
15. Changed - Nebulae now have more color-coordinated ability classes, rather than essentially random.
16. Changed - Planet portraits now refer to more appropriate stock portrait files, by atmosphere and type.
17. Changed - Ruins abilities on planets now have obfuscated descriptions. There are now 2 possible ruin descriptions, which are repeated for every type of ruin. Now, you cannot tell whether a planet has regular or unique tech based on the ability description.
18. Added - Wheel quadrant type.
19. Added - Slew of special planet abilities.

Are you accepting new planet textures? I find the Lacota gas giant models with the lone storm in the south a bit hard to look at... plus the planet models need corresponding planet portraits that match them.

(I hope BM incorporates some of this update, especially the new quadrant & system types and the stellar abilities)

BM 1.11 incorporated a pre-release build of beta 12, though Kwok did his own thing with the stellar abilities (he used a build before I undid the "random()" calls and such).

Lacota wasn't quite done with the planet textures, but real life intervened before he could finish. If you want to make some new planet textures, I'd be glad to use them. They'll have to be submitted to the Multimedia Pack, naturally. Eye-wink

These are the main differences between the BM version of FQM and the latest FQM:
- Different stellar abilities
- BM uses stock planet textures
- No Green Stars in BM
- No Quaternary/Quintuple Star Systems in BM
- No Wheel Quadrant Type in BM
- No Blackbody curve Black Holes in BM... but will add in future

They only appear in a small number of quadrant types (none of the "normal" age ones), and in fairly small numbers even then (eg: ~3% in Ancient). Only the Star Heavy quadrant has a sizable number of 4-5 star systems (~10%).

Strange for Captain Kwok to not have green stars when he's obviously green. Must be a cover-up. Smiling

As regards multiple star systems, data is incomplete but most multiples are trinaries, Examples being Polaris, the North star and Alpha Centauri. Multiples decrease exponentially as more stars are in a system. There are known Quadruple and Quintuple systems and 2 known Sextuple systems. Castor which is a binary pair in a distant orbit of 2 closer binary pairs and ADS 9731, which is 2 trinaries together.

Hmm... I made a decent system type with 13 stars. Smiling there are a few small issues with flying between the stars, but it doesn't seem to be a big issue.

Sorry guys I'am on new terrotory here. Where do I get the bmp files needed in this mod and why isn't it just added with the mod?

The reason they're not included is because they can be used with multiple mods, not just FQM, so it would be a waste of bandwidth to make people download them for every mod they are used in.

IMHO it would be better if 95% of asteroids cloaked ships, but the cloak(/scanner jammer?) level varied from 1 to max (and the cloak level was indicated in the asteroids description).
Also, it might be fun, if the damaging asteroid fields weren't shown as such - right now it's too easy to avoid them anyway.

Why no 4-5 star systems? Just make them very rare!

EDIT: Planet abilities? Those are really great! That will make each system even more unique!
