Access Violation..? |
Tonight while playing SE5 v1.58, i had an error that read..........Access Violation at address 0071f052 in module 'SE5.exe.' Read of address 00000008.
The wierd thing is, it started happening around turn 2406.0, and only happens when i click the Planets List Button on top of the playing screen. This is the first time its happened since i've owned the game and i bought it when it first came out. I just started playing it again after about a 6 month break (been playing WOW,and MTW2K). I have no mods in my game, and just downloaded the new patch 4 days ago. The wierdest thing is that the game plays great, so long as i dont use the planet list button, lol. This is my 3rd campaign, and the game ran fine until tonights game, been playing it all week, pretty much. I'm running WinXP, and all my drivers are updated and my system has and does meet all the requirements. Any thoughts or idea's would be greatly apprieciated on this strange error.
ty for your time.

Re: Access Violation..?
I've abandoned 3 stock and 1 BM game spoilt by this access violation stuff. I don't now any way around them so I guess it's waiting for the next patch indeed
I never had this happen with 1.44 to be honest.

Re: Access Violation..?
You could always avoid the planet list window.
Patch should be out this week, so it shouldn't be a long wait.

Re: Access Violation..?
I am waiting for the next patch to play again. The error seems to be in a difference between the remembered galaxy and the actual galaxy... because if you cheat with `omni` then the planet's screen doesn't crash the game.

Re: Access Violation..?
That is correct. It's a glitch with the memory sight for other player's colonies in the planet list window.
Re: Access Violation..?
I am patched up to 1.74 and have this access violation crash occur under diverse circumstances. Sometimes it strikes when I click on a planet and sometimes when I click on something else. It seems to be worse actually when I try the Balance Mod. I do not know what to do. Any suggestions?

Re: Access Violation..?
It happened to me this weekend when I was starting a new game. I pressed "Add a new empire" and bam! It happened about 4 times, could not get a new game running. I came back about 3 hours later to write down the error and it has been working fine ever since.
Re: Access Violation..?
Why are there so many people who don't update their software?
Re: Access Violation..?
Since my last post I erased SEV from my system, re-loaded it, patched to 1.74 and attempted to run it. It almost immediately blew up with the Access Violation. I ran it in the Balance Mod and it crashed by Access Violation even sooner.
I guess I will need to stop playing this for a while and see if another patch comes out and fixes this. I really like this game but I have NEVER been able to finish a game because of one sort of crash bug or another.
My pattern now is to go play something else and monitor this site to see of another patch has been released, patch the game and see if it plays.
SEIV was notably stable and robust by the later patches.

Re: Access Violation..?
Trying re-installing then patching if you haven't already. Sometimes that helps. Don't alter your files right away either if you like modding them yourself (or apply any mods until it works).
Re: Access Violation..?
When the access violation happened to me I had completely erased my hard drive and started over (I use this particular computer for gaming only, so I didn’t lose much). It was after I reloaded SEV along with the 1.74 patch, stock game only. It seems to be working fine now but I always update my software.

Re: Access Violation..?
Might be a corrupted file. You could try to re-install SE5 on your PC or (for testing purposes) on a different one and try again. Don't forget to back up your save games first.
Unfortunately, there is no way to tell (as far as I can say) which file exactly causes the access violation. Worst case is that it's not an SE5 file at all - in which case re-installing SE5 wouldn't help either.
Another, probably crazy, idea is to install a mod which changes the gameplay, like the Balance Mod, and try again. I have no idea why this should make a difference when it comes to pressing the Planets List button, but it's easy to do, and if you have no clue, everything might (or might not) work.
