Well there are three types of picture files: LargePortrait.jpeg, Portrait.bmp and InvPortrait.jpeg that each ship uses. In addition there is the unit texture bmp for space borne units, the shipset texture bmp that gives a profile shot and lastly the shipset top down bmp. I would look for the absence or corrupted Large or standard portrait files for the ship in question, there the same size as the message screen pictures.

Oh, and another thing to check is if the suffix code for the image is correct, I've done this many times making shipsets where I save it as the wrong file type (jpeg instead of bmp and vice-versa).
