Bal Mod 1.11 Problem

I downloaded the BM1.11 to update a 1.10 game that I already had in progress. It ran a few turns seemingly fine, but now crashes with a "cannot find TDirect3DxFile.start - Cant find file" error when AI Player 5 starts his turn. This is repeatable. I did a file search and it doesn't look like such a file exists. I can't find any files with a .start extension. Help, ideas anyone?

Did it occur after a system restart?

You can also try deleting the soundeffects.txt file in the Balance Mod data folder.

No, it happened on the 5th turn after starting up in BM1.11 - I tried deleting the soundeffects.txt file and the crash is still exactly the same at the same place.

Are you using any custom shipsets? Does it occur during a certain player's turn?

Yes, it appears to happen at the very end of ai player 4 (Breen) or the beginning of ai player 5 (Alliance), both custom.

Then I'd have to say it's a probably a problem with player 5's files.

Can you give me a hint as to which file to look at? I can't find anything that refers, either directly or indirectly, to anything even remotely like TDirect3DxFile.start.

It's an error related with directx, either graphics or sound. In this case, I'd have to assume it's one of the model (.x) files. You can try deleting them (all, or one by one) to see if it's a specific file. The set will use default models in place of the deleted files.

I'm using bal mod v1.11 (SE v 1.58)and started an new game (quick start i chose to be Terran). After a few turns, a diplomacy message tells me that Terran is offering an alliance. I also see Terran in my list of enemy empires. Bug or what?

It's possible that there are two Terran empires in your game. There's a bug where some empires are being chosen more than once during game setup.

OK, thank you. I'm guessing that this bug occurs only in 'quick games' and can be avoided if i set the empires manually, right?

about the bug where the same empire is chosen twice, is there a workaround for that?

The only workaround is to check if you have duplicate empires or not when you start. It can occur in any game with auto generated opponents.

You can manually add empires, but they'll be stuck with the default scripts, which are less exciting than the custom scripts used for the game's stock empires.

Would staring a game, then changing all the empires to player control and saving them keep the new scripts?

If so, than you could do that, and put in whatever empires you want, and however many duplicates you want.

OK, so I eliminated that empire/shipset from the directory and started another game. I am about 105 turns into it and now am getting the same error, this time with the N'grath. Are any of the imported empires/shipsets compatible with BM 1.11? Or can we expect all of them to crash at some point in the game?

There's no reason why a ship set (the non-AI components) should perform any different with the mod.

Actually, I remember that I had this problem with the N'grath back when I was playing 1.09, so I don't think it is a 1.11 issue per se. It might not even be a Balance Mod issue either, it's just that I have only been playing BM so that's where it shows up. Is it your opinion that it's a bug in the empire/shipset?

That's sets. There are more than one (Alliance and N'grath so far) giving the exact same problem. Isn't that a bit strange?

Not necessarily. You'd have to see which was common between the two ship sets - such as if they were converted or designed with the same program etc.
