Hi, i just bought Space Empires V by steam, i use an old 15" CRT monitor to play so i run it on 800x600 a 85Hz to avoid flickering, the game automatically changes the resolution to 1024x728 wen it starts but i get an white screen and all that i heard its the sound of the game, i changed my desktop to 1024 and started the game and it worked fine, i wanted to know why is the game having problems wen the resolution is changed and how i can fix it? its annoyng to be changing the resolutions mannualy each time.
My pc is an old P4 1.6 512 mb ram fx5200 128 mb

I'm glad I found this thread. For months I have had an issue where the game would start off with a completely white screen. If I ALT+TAB out and back in, I would have a normal screen. However, the bottom quarter of the screen, when clicked, would kick me out to the desktop. This made the game unplayable, because alot of buttons are done there 
.
I play on an HDTV monitor, thus I had my resolution set to 1280x720. It hadn't even crossed my mind to set my desktop resolution to the same as the game resolution of 1280x800. Just like the op, setting my desktop to the game resolution solves the issue. So, the question is why does the game get screwy if the desktop is a different resolution from the game? The game should be able to set it's resolution just fine(all my other games do).

The minimum resolution supported by the game is 1024x768. This is clearly stated in the System Requirements.
