Could the Space Empires V expansion be soon?

I'm not so sure, there seems to be a few things popping up after 1.58, so we'll have to see how easy they are to resolve.

I'm more curious as to what a Space Empires Expansion would be. In other games I play expansions generally provide new units or races and the like, but that would be irrelevant in SEV as you can just mod that in and many people already have.

do not underestimate the "...UI improvements, modding requests..." part, especially if the requests include AI improvements. I don't think it will be soon.

I would welcome and pay an expansion even if the only addition was specialized, distinct and "smart" AI for the empires, a streamlined way to select and incorporate civilizations in the start of the game - including modded empires - unique homeworlds for the races including OUR Solar System and perhaps an optional FTL system for the "Not connected Warp Points" option that makes no sense as it is.

I haven't heard anything about an expansion pack.

SEV, more than a feeling.

It appears that I have been suckered in to believing the 'truth' of the internet. An expansion for Space Empires doesn't sound right as none of the previous versions had expansions.

I'd rather see some more polishing of the game I've already paid for before being expected to buy an expansion.

I'm sorry, I'm not doubting your information, it's just that the idea of a Space Empires expansion doesn't sound right to me. Usually I treat most of what I find on the internet with scepticism, but for some reason your quote convinced me that an expansion was coming.

I don't know if an expansion is coming or not, I don't know that much, and I know you've got links that I haven't visited yet. My point was meant to be that I was stupid for not researching more and just being lazy.

uhm, you know that MM is a one-man-army?!
so the current split of work would be, if the expansion is realy in planning, something like this

bugfixing and adding features: 1 programmer

developing new expansion pack: the rest of the company

With all my heart, I hope that MM does not take heed of this Wade person and decide to ditch the updates in order to make an expansion which will not only introduce new buggy features, but leave current ones untouched.

MM only has so much time and effort and I think we'd all much rather he got on with fixing and improving the current game, rather than get side tracked on an expansion which we probably wouldn't see for sometime and in the end, don't really need.

To be blunt Wade, most of your ideas can be modded in and the rest just go against the nature of Space Empires mechanics, i,e FTL drives. I rather enjoy SEV without FTL drives and I don't really see the need for such a heavy overhaul of the movement system. If you want to change SEV to suit you, by all means do so. I know I've changed a lot of the game to suit myself personally, but please don't ask Aaron to take away valuable time from bugfixes, UI improvements to change the game to suit yourself.

MM still needs to pay the bills and after spending so much time making this engine an expansion pack makes sence.The game still lacks flavour in many areas,more events,monsters,pirates,much needed expanded ground combat would be great.

Keeping in mind that thanks to Vista & Nvidia breaking a degree of backwards compatibility I haven't even been able to play a ton of SE5 (having a blast in a SE4 game with a friend though), I'd still be willing to buy an expansion.

All I'd want in it is a patch roll-up, perhaps a map/game/scenario editor as described above, and perhaps a few UI tweaks and I'd pay up.

Why? This is, like someone else said, a one man dev house, and if we lost the SE franchise.. well, clearly, it'd piss off the Xi-Chung hive and they'd destroy the planet. I've therefore got slightly lower standards; some of the niceties are made up for by uniqueness and a willingness to simply support the dev. Are there any other games on the market like SE4/5? The answer: Not really. Back in the day it had some competition but they've all, to my knowledge, withered and died, and open source attempts to revive them move at a tectonic pace.

If I end up making a few million any time soon, I'll contact MM and offer him lifetime employment. Until then, as long as some sort of effort is put in to one, I for one wouldn't mind buying an expansion a year (and a full new version every other year perhaps, or whatever time frame is realistic).

I agree with MRing, we need to support MM. If he needs to bring out an expansion to help pay for continued development in Space Empires I'd be willing to pay for it.

Hell, I'd not only be willing to pay for an expansion to help support Aaron, I'd probably be willing to do the bugfixing and maintenance of SEV if Aaron wanted to start on an expansion or SEVI. But then, somehow I doubt Aaron would want another programmer in his code
