Someone is wrong...take an ice cube and throw it in a cup of hot water then do the same with cold water...

No need to use all caps in the title and there is a forum for OT questions.

Regarding the question itself, it depends on the situation. If it's a hot cup versus a cold cup, the hot cup will melt the ice faster. If it's running cold water versus standing hot water, than it's likely the ice will melt faster with the cold water. The running water removes the freshly melted cold water, while the freshly melted ice remains more or less around the ice in the hot water, insulating it.

You can do this experiment with a frozen steak. put it in bowl of warm water, pretty soon the warm water is cold from the "steak cube". now put a steak in a bowl of cold water, and drizzle more cold water on it, the refreshed bowl will thaw your steak faster (melt the ice). Oh, your steak needs to be in a plastic bag...

SEV, more than a feeling.

If u live in a northern climate go outside in winter time throw hot water on icy windshield and it will freeze adding to the ice but throw cold water on the windshield and watch the ice come off. BTW dont use real hot water unless u want to see the windshield crack.

Basic science answer to the freezing windshield thing, actually. The molecules in hot water move about more rapidly, and form bonds more easily and often. As such, this means that hot water can actually freeze faster than cold, strange though it may sound - I run into this at work a fair bit when I'm prepping drinks.

As to whether cold water would heat up something better than warm, I think that's already been covered pretty well.

so would the temperature of ice that's been frozen from boiled water have a higher temperature than that of ice frozen from cold water?

No, frozen is frozen. The only things that affect the temperature that ice forms at is what else is dissolved in the water, and (maybe) the atmospheric pressure. (I'm not sure about the latter.)

Cold water melts ice faster.

It's one of these "non intuitive" things about science.

you would expect that the transition of the temperature from hot to cold in the water as the ice melts to be linear but it's not! Search it out on the web...

Lol correction:

actually hot water freezes faster than cold water. I got confused there...

I don't know about melting ice. Intuition would suggest hot water melting it faster, but beware!
