Difficulty getting my CD to read... |

Hi!
I recently purchased a laptop (my first), and was very excited about installing SE:V on it. But, when I insert the CD into the drive, the drive just starts to hum really loudly. When I go into My Computer, it recognizes the CD -- as in, the SE:V logo appears -- and I can even hit "Explore" in the right click menu to see what's on the CD. But when I double click on the setup file, My Computer freezes, and I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL it. My friend's new laptop has the same problem, though my other friend's laptop does not. The only difference, as far as I can tell, is that the new laptops are running Vista, while the old one is on XP.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to make this work? I've tried cleaning the CD, and it's not at all scratched. Besides, it works fine in my XP buddy's computer...
Thanks!

I had this same problem on my new laptop as well.
Groovy Baby Yeah!
Re: Difficulty getting my CD to read...
By the way, has anybody noticed you don't need the CD in the drive in order to play the game - this is with NO hacks applied, just the original game patched to 1.44.
I wish more games did this. I've come across some games that add this feature in later patches, but for the most part you're stuck with the disk. After the initial rush has worn off, I rarely go back to games after I've moved on to a new one - unless I get a craving for it and I can run it without digging out the cd and figuring out which drive I can remove another disk from.

You aren't alone; searching these forums turns up several threads reporting problems getting SEV to work under Vista.
"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it /is/ a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.

Space Empires IV does not need the cd-rom either...there are various games who do not need a cd (ex. Knights of Honor, games by Paradox or Ageod etc.). I usually install and try at once every game to see if they ask for the cd. I agree...i'd like to have all my games working without cd...it's a pain for normal customers who buy their games.

Space Empires I, II, III didn't need a CD in the drive either but for slightly different reasons

That could be a drive issue, especially if the same CD can be read on another drive without problems.

I've yet to hear of Vista being unable to read CDs.. Do you have trouble reading other random CDs? Have you made sure your system is up to date?
At worst, you can just copy your installation of SE5 from your desktop to your laptop, over a network or something. SE5 will then ask for your CD key on first run.
