Forum improvement concerning "Bugs"

Soumis par matschmoon le Mar, 2007-09-11 05:35 Space Empires V General

Hi @ all,

First of all: A great game! I really enjoy playing such a complex game.. I´ve never seen/played something that complex before.

As usual, games have bugs. And it´s a great thing to have a community having a look at this and trying to solve problems.

But (there´s always a "but"):

The forum´s layout is a little bit confusingly complex. It would be very useful to create an extra section especially for bug reports.. and not only an endless thread "Damn Dirty Bugs/Annoyances". Mods/Admins could add something like " [known] , [no bug] , [solved]" to single report´s topics. I think it would/will be easier to find and report bugs, etc.

And there´s a special reason for this suggestion:

Ship sizes increased... to "What the hell is this???". From time to time the ships in my game are displayed in such a big size, that they cover the whole universe in which they are. (sorry, I don´t have a screenshot right now.. I´m "at work".. hehe.. I will add a link this evening) First I thought it´s just a funny kind of background.. until it moved!!! *Whhooooow*

This can (temporarily) be solved by saving the game, finish and restart it. But yesterday evening it occured about 6-8 times. Never happened before. No mods installed, only patch 1.44 (german).

So, my question: Is it known and/or maybe already solved?

Thanks+Greetz from Hamburg/GER

Huh? There already is a separate section for bug reports. Oddly enough, it's called "Bug Reports".

There's not much the admins can do to force people to post messages where they belong.

"Good morning, Pooh Bear," said Eeyore gloomily. "If it /is/ a good morning," he said. "Which I doubt," said he.

Eeeehhhmm *oops*... You´re right! However, I´d really prefer a report chapter in the game´s section to where it belongs. SEV-Bugs in SEV, etc.

Eh, yes. Good morning... btw it´s ´bout 2pm in germany right now *ashamed*

*edit*:
Have you ever experienced this strange bug, I mentioned above?

There is also an explicit bug tracker available:

http://www.spaceempires5.com/en-US/project/issues/219

The game dev doesn't make any explicit use of it (marking things fixed, not a bug, etc.), but all entries have an email sent directly to Malfador for consideration.

If the forum admins were actually active and bothered moderating, they could very easily move threads to the appropriate location, and most people would catch on.

Or they could give one or two of the beta testers the power to mark certain bugs as fixed in patch number xyz. Smiling

Anybody can do that, as far as I can tell. At least, I seem to be able to access the status-changing functionality. Maybe its from this weird "beta tester" group Julian set up a long time ago... I'm not sure.

You can adjust it if you made the report.

Not much point to that, since SEIV and Starfury aren't still being developed, and hardly produce any traffic in their respective sections.

Moin.. eh.. Hi,

Pretty funny, that this turns out to become a thread about the forum´s layout.

Eeehm.. the most important point (at least for me!) drowned:

What about these gigantic displayed ships? It becomes a little bit annoying.. gently expressed. Every turn saving and reloading.. man, this sucks!

Pretty funny that we discussed the major topic of the thread's original post? Indeed!

Hi,

I had to get some attention... somehow. Well, there must be a reason for a new thread. And, obviously, it´s because I couldn´t find any hints or solutions to the ship size problem. And this could have been solved easyly in a sidnote (which a:would be very kind and b:sadly did not happen yet).

I am convinced that you realized that the first post contains two problems. And this -Pretty funny, that this turns out to become a thread about the forum´s layout.- wasn´t meant offensively or boldly. Sorry therefore. I´m used to threads, in which Mods&Admins say something like "Back to topic, guys!" because "minor" problems become the main issue in the discussion. And I just wonder ´bout your (all of you) dicipline to follow the central theme. Smiling

But for all that, I still think it would be better to have a respective section. (Is this written correctly? I sit here with my dictionary... oh man) One advantage would be, that it also works like an archive. One doesn´t have to search through bugs from all SE games. And I´m convinced that situations like this will be prevented.

As I said earlier, there is already an explicit bug reports section:

http://www.spaceempires5.com/en-US/project/issues/219

A lot of people don't use it, but it is there. New "posts" to the bug tracker show up in the recent forum discussions page just like forum posts. Adding another forum section to duplicate this functionality would not necessarily make things better.

Maybe something like this? Sticking out tongue

http://www.spaceempires5.com/en-US/project/issues/SE5

All bugs concerning SE5 are listed there.

Regarding Captain Kwoks power - I think it is related to his status as "beta tester" because i could not change the bugreports I submitted. And i clearly remember that Julian asked some beta tester on IRC to try if he can change the status of submitted bugs.

Now we only need a person that is beta tester and has too much time, so he/she can update the bug reports. Sticking out tongue

I've never seen this particular bug reported before; you may be the first person to encounter it.

If I didn't occasionally see entire threads moved for being completely off-topic, I wouldn't know this forum had moderators.

According to the searches I just tried, there are no posts in Bug Reports about StarFury, and every reference to SEIV seems to be describing how something worked differently in SEIV than it does in SEV. The current section already seems to be doing what you want.

Another bug smashed... hehehe... It seems to be a problem with the regional settings in german versions. Probably because we display numbers (1Mio.) like 1.000.000,00 . So, if "," and "." are changed in the settings.. it works. Well, great.. another anglizism... now in numbers Smiling Anyway. Thanks to Aaron. Thanks for all your help here, too.
