Graphically display Empire Boarders?

Soumis par Grazic le Lun, 2006-10-09 00:37 Space Empires V General

Does anyone miss the way that a specific Empire boarders were graphically displayed in SE IV?
If this feature does exist in SE V can someone please direct me to it?

There is one map view that shows :-
"Ally Systems" - Shows your systems and your ally systems in Blue
"Enemy Systems" - Shows your systems and your enemy systems in Red. (Seems strange that it shows your systems too)

But what happens if I want to view just systems that the Terran have claimed, or the EEE, etc?

Thanks
Baron Grazic

Ha ha. I though you were

Ha ha. I though you were referring to boarding. Sticking out tongue

I've asked about that - I think it's important at least to be able to see what each empire has claimed. And I'd also like to see a little coloured halo/cloud around each one as well of the empire colour.

I agree,

SE IV did this MUCH better (a recurring theme in my comments, unfortunately) so this game should have included ALL the original functionality plus MORE, like allowing custom defined views for the user.

As it stands, the drab brown background with no colour coding AT ALL is a HUGE step backward!

Drab background?

Soumis par Thy Reaper le Mer, 2006-10-11 14:17

As I recall, SE:IV had a pure black or gridded background to the quadrant view. How does SE:V have a 'drab' background in comparison?

Otherwise, I do agree that some color coding would be nice, but I can't remember having it readily available in SE:IV (had to go to claimed systems screen).

No SEIV had color display

Soumis par PyroMancer le Mer, 2006-10-11 14:56

No SEIV had color display for map. It's been a while since I played so i don't completely remember but it was like Green Circle for systems only you control, green triangle for systems you had ships in, Yellow explosive for systems that were contested, red for enemy claimed systems, Also I recall it showing each empires color. I think the galaxy map was mostly red/green but there was another map you could bring up under empire opitions that showed layout of galaxy on who claimed what. You could turn on/off each empire from the display.

I do agree with Antarian though there have been a lot of steps backwards in SEV. And I'm not just talking the Research which copies SEIII and can't quere stuff up anymore Sad.

Aaron really can't win on the research screen.
SEIV: "We want the SEIII system back!"
SEV: "We want the SEIV system back!"

To clarify how the various quadrent maps worked:
On the main screen, SEIV had a grid background and white rings indicating systems. If you were alone in a system, it'd be your empire color. If you were NOT alone, it was a triangle. No enemy/ally indication.

Right-clicking there would bring up a larger view with options for Systems to Avoid, Enemy Claimed, Ally Claimed, Spaceports and Resupply depots. You could only pick one at once. Clicking on a system let you set a note. Yellow indicated overlaps.

SE5 indicates systems that are occupied with a circle, non-occupied with a star (but yeah, not making a distinction between you and enemy is..odd.). Notes in SEV are set in the system report screen. So we just need the multi-empire view back, and get rid of the you/enemy identical problem, along with maybe allowing click-claiming again.

Systems to Avoid were set in Empire options, borders in the Empire screen, which also let you see the claimed systems of any empire. Yellow indicated overlaps. This screen was REMOVED for SE5, and replaced with a duplicate of the main quadrant map.

SE5 does have a few new features like Show Fleet strength.

Map is a bit better than that

Not quite. The rule (at least in the demo, but changing it in full to what you described is a bit hard to imagine) seems to be that a circle is a system occupied by one empire, while a system with two or more empires in it (regardless of relationship) is a cross. But I second (third? tenth?) the request for color-coding.

Each empire does have coloured map icons so let's use them!

Soumis par Captain Kwok le Mer, 2006-10-11 20:00

There are coloured map images included with each Empire's flagset, so I'd imagine it would be possible to display each system with the empire's colour as it was in SE:IV. I'll bug Aaron about it some more.
