Weighted armour in Balance Mod

Soumis par Brad le Lun, 2007-08-27 16:34 SE:V MODs

I made a small tweak to my current game of Balance Mod in which adding lots of armour to your ships will actually slow them down. With the kind permission of Captain Kwok I'm posting the changes here in case anyone else might want something similar.

You can download the zip (~58kb) from http://www.hotkey.net.au/~bjhann/Weighted_Armour.zip It contains two modified data files - VehicleSizes.txt and Components.txt. To install, make a copy of your BM gametypes directory and install these two data files over the top of the existing files in the Data subdirectory.

For those interested in the guts of it, all I did was add a Movement Standard ability to all armour components with a negative value equal to 10% of the component's structure. The reason VehicleSizes.txt is also changed is because you have to explicitly define engine components, otherwise it counts armour components towards the number of engines you are allowed on each ship.

The ships OVERALL tonnage is unaffected by Armor. The amount of engines you add is what affects speed based on the OVERALL weight of the ship.

The addition of armor doesn't increase the weight beyond what can be added to the ship. I don't think the mod make sense UNLESS you make it so that you can over load the ship. Make a second armor componet that has the negative impacts that has the special ability to be added to the ship allowing it to exceed the standard tonnage.

For example you have a Destroyer that is max 400kt then you add the extra armor to it making the ship go to 450kt. It would cause a double slowdown I THINK as it factors your added armor and redoes the mass calculations with the engines.

"kt" is a misleading unit; it is more like spaces than an actual measurement of mass. Its a fake unit that exists only for the sake of convenience.

Take a 400kt frigate and fill it out with components. How many structure points does it have? I bet it has a lot more than 400.

Note that weight is not a property of starships; there is no weight in space. Pedantics aside...

Structure has nothing to do with mass either. Structure is just an abstract representation of how resistant to deformation a component is. Really, you shouldn't consider any of the in-game values to represent any sort of realistic, consistent mass. kt is just a generic unit in SE.

The heavy armor would only be able to be placed in armor slots, so there would be a limit on how much could be added.
