Mini-Mod: Gatling Point-Defence Weapons

A mini-mod which should slot right into most games based on stock components. All I've done is increased the firing rate of light PD weapons to five times per second and decreased the damage proportionally. The overall ratio of damage/second is essentially the same as in stock, but a gatling blaster looks a whole lot cooler Eye-wink

A ready-to-install version can be downloaded at http://www.hotkey.net.au/~bjhann/Gatling_PD.zip or you can make a few simple alterations to components.txt in your favourite mod (note: these changes are based on the stock install and as such are not configured for Balance Mod etc).

1. Change the Weapon Reload Rate MS Formula for point - defense cannons, point - defense beam and point - defense blaster to 200.

2. Change the damage values for point - defense cannons to the following:
Weapon Space Min Damage Modifier Formula := iif([%Range%] <= 70, (2.5 + (([%Level%] - 1) * 0.5)), 0)
Weapon Space Max Damage Modifier Formula := iif([%Range%] <= 70, (2.5 + (([%Level%] - 1) * 0.5)), 0)

3. Change the damage values for point - defense blaster to the following:
Weapon Space Min Damage Modifier Formula := iif([%Range%] <= 70, [%Level%], 0)
Weapon Space Max Damage Modifier Formula := iif([%Range%] <= 70, [%Level%], 0)

4. Change the damage values for point - defense beam to the following:
Weapon Space Min Damage Modifier Formula := iif([%Range%] <= 100, (1 + (([%Level%] - 1) * 0.5)) - ([%Range%] * 0.04), 0)
Weapon Space Max Damage Modifier Formula := iif([%Range%] <= 100, (1.8 + (([%Level%] - 1) * 0.5)) - ([%Range%] * 0.04), 0)

5. Change the Weapon Beam Duration for the point - defense beam to 100.

That's it!

I like the sound (and look) of this, but I'm a bit worried how it will affect turn processing times with lots of big battles.

Have you tested it in terms of time used on large scale?

have you modified the accuracy of the weapons to reflect your changes, or atleast the cost? having many more shots at the same accuracy makes them a lot more effective against missiles and smaller fighters.

It may also spread the damgage out better, allowing you to get that next shot off quicker when swarmed with fighters.

I like it, tends to take some edge off fighters. Is the formula for the PD Blasters correct? In my testing, the other two had small damage v. the Blasters which was like 120 or something. Is that what you intended?

Note that in stock the blaster fires twice as fast as the other two. The damage ratios are unchanged - all damage formulae above result in the same damage per second as you get in stock.

I have a sneaking suspicion that BM already increased the firing rate of PD weapons, although not to the extent of the above changes. All you need to do is reduce the damage caused in proportion to the reduction in firing rate, eg if you make it fire twice as fast, make each shot do half the damage.

One item to consider if you are reducing the damage of point defense weapons in proportion to a firing rate change is that it can increase the number of hits that it takes to destroy a seeker, which can lead to a disproportionate decrease in effectiveness...

Doing some math, there's no way you can increase the accuracy and have the same kind of probability of killing a target in the same time period. A 1 second fire (1 hit to kill) at 90% success reaches "statisticaly dead" at 4 seconds (99.99% chance). Halving the damage and doubling the fire rate and pushing the accuracy to a whopping 98% the object after 4 seconds only has a 98% chance of having killed the target. The probability doesn't increase any farther as the probability that it took that many shots is ever-decreasing.

Unless my math is wrong, but I can't seem to find an error.

Increasing the rate of fire also has the benefit of allowing you to engage more targets since the first one will die faster. Perhaps we could just create a new weapon trading size for ROF. After all, a real gatling field gun is about the size of a cannon. Smiling

...because a gatling gun is not a faster gun, but "lets tie six of them together! When one is firing, the rest are cooling off and reloading!"

I'd be willing to put forth the idea that the first gatling gun was designed by de Vinci when he strung 10 guns in a row next to each other on one side of a large triangle (with 10 more on each of the other two sides) and put wheels on. The first 10 would fire while the second 10 get loaded (by, like 3 people) then the entire contraption would rotate and repeat.
