1 crew = 1 combat strength marine? |
Do the ship's regular crews function as combat marines during boarding action? If so, how do they compare to boarding parties in terms of their combat strength?

Yeah, just ask any marine! Heck, ask my marine stepson.

Note, however, when planning how many boarding parties you'll need that you want substantial overkill. Boarding combat is actually handled as a continuing process, where each side takes damage based at least partly on the ratio of combatants; so if you have a significant advantage you'll capture the ship much faster. Since it can continue to fight you while boarding combat is ongoing, it will do less damage to your side (and possible take less damage from your side) if you overwhelm the defenders.
Re: 1 crew = 1 combat strength marine?
jdunson is absolutely correct. 10 marines will never beat 100 crewmen in stock. Even if they could, it would be a very slow process.
Balance Mod is easier to keep track of since it uses a 1:1 ratio (1 crewman = 1 marine). Although this is ludicrously unrealistic, it makes for easier calculation and improves playability.

Re: 1 crew = 1 combat strength marine?
Although it's never implicitly stated that it's 1 marine to 1 crew in the Balance Mod...
The actual description is:
"Boarding Parties contain enough attackers to overcome [%Amount1%] crew members on the target ship."
So you really don't know how many attackers there are, only the amount of crew they can take out.

It's set by line 434 in settings.txt: Space Combat Crew Boarding Strength
Can remember in the standard data files if it's set to 1 or not.
