Problems with star create/destroy components |
Can someone confirm whether these are bugs or intended features?
1. The Stellar Nucleonic Torpedo (destroys a star) only has 1 level, and Components.txt indicates it can only destroy a size 1 star. Where as the Stellar Plasma Sphere (creates a star) has 5 levels and can create up to a size 5 star.
2. All the stellar manipulation components come in symmetrical matching pairs. But the Stellar Nucleonic Torpedo is 250kT at level 1, while the Stellar Plasma Sphere is 200kT at level 5. All the other pairs have equal tonnage.

Re: Problems with star create/destroy components
1. Sounds interesting. MM might have missed that. IIRC, the ministers for these are still non-functional. I suspect that creating the AI for these two ministers will increase the number of levels of the torpedo.
2. Stars are inherently stable. You just need to move enough matter into the same area and it will coalesce on its own into a star. Which is basically a contained explosion in space. So blowing one up takes lots and lots of energy input into an already explosive environment.

Re: Problems with star create/destroy components
The stock game doesn't seem to use the levels of many of the stellar manipulation components in a meaningful manner.
Storms, for instance...I can tell no meaningful difference between a storm made with a type I component vs. a type V component.
The planet making components do indeed appear to make maximum sized planets based on the component level.
Re: Problems with star create/destroy components
Destroy Storm components do seem to check. then again.... Storm sizes seem to do nothing but determine how destructive the storm is.

Re: Problems with star create/destroy components
Is there any reason to create storms? It's insanely expensive, and the vast majority of the storms I've created have no abilities. Only rarely do I get a storm which causes damage, interferes with scanners, or anything else. Most of them are just meaningless clouds of gas...
I hate to spend a turn and an expensive component on fancy colored gas which does nothing for my war effort.

Re: Problems with star create/destroy components
It used to be a sort of popular tactic in SE:IV PBW games to create lots of storms (20+) on warp points leading to enemy systems.

Re: Problems with star create/destroy components
You can create multiple storms in the same sector? Woah, I totally missed that... Now I feel dumb. I guess I've just never seen multiple storms in the same sector, so I didn't even think to try that.

Re: Problems with star create/destroy components
1: I don't know if it's actually relevent. I've never tested them, so I don't know if there's a funtional difference. It may be that the game doesn't actually check star size when the components are used.
2: so?
