Mod idea: Simpleton Mod

Soumis par MRing le Ven, 2007-07-27 15:31 SE:V MODs

I was just reading the "Issues that have forced me to shelve the game..." thread, and this mod idea occured to me that would bypass some of the bugs and quirks that aren't entirely paved over yet.

1) No fighters, no troops, no drones. Just frigates, destroyers, cruisers, etc. If seekers and mines cause significant problems, trash them too.

2) Due to #1 above, possibly no need for PD weapons, and no need for small weapons. For the purpose of simplicity, perhaps take a giant axe to the exist weapons and knock them down to a handful of essentials.

3) Supplies and cargo complicate things. Remove it. All ships can be made to have eternal supplies probably, though some weapons, if not removed, may still need munitions. Another reason to axe them.

4) No intel. One more complication. Cloaking, too.

5) Axe many racial components, merge the most useful perhaps in to the main tech tree for all.

6) No diplomacy nor alliances for AI's. They're all evil.

7) Perhaps taking an idea from an older mod, it may be possible and desireable for the theme to take an axe to planetary constructions. Spaceyards, one or two other buildings, and City's that provide marginal amounts of all the economic output needed for the game.

Cool A simpler research tree could be made -- perhaps one giant monolithic one that all points can be dumped in to.

Cool All of the above should hopefully made AI design easier. Very little to worry about -- economy is about as "dumb" as it can be made. Research, same thing. It's primary concern would be defending, attacking and colonizing as viciously as possible, all three of which made in to much simpler affairs.

Clearly, this mod wouldn't be for everybody and may lend itself to blitzkrieg style games. I don't even know much HTML, much less have modding capabilities, so I'll never make this myself. Nevertheless, it occured to me as a way to avoid many of SE:V's current hang-ups and as a "quickie" game style mod.

So basically you want to take all the improvements that have been made since SE2 and throw them out the window? Why not just play SE2?

Some of it is a response to facets that tend to still have bugs -- like troops. Troops and fighters and some other things, if I could make the mod, would be reintroduced once there were no longer any problems at all with them.

Mines would be gone, though. Because I'd be a tyrannical dictator mod developer, and I don't like 'em, as it just delays inevitable military conquest. Sticking out tongue

Other then that, it's almost more of a reshuffle of SE:IV than a return to SE2. Besides, c'mon, out of all those wacky weapons that have their own time consuming tech tree, how many would you really miss anyway? That sort of stuff would be pruned. Again, less tech -> less decisions a dumb AI has to make -> more competitive AI.

And again, for the sake of simplicity, a combined tech tree. Can't hardly confuse an AI that way, though, again, if I had the skills to make a more sophisticated AI, I'd split it out in to the basic categories, like hulls, propulsion, beam weapons, projectile weapons, defenses.

I probably really could swing part of the mod if I based it off BM, but no way to address the AI or more complicated things (I expect a merged tech tree would be quite complicated to actually implement), so it's all just conjecture anyway. I didn't say it'd be for everybody, either; just those that dont need all the feature-creep. Stars! from the 90s; an example of a simple game that managed to be complex and extremely fun with 1/4 the features of SE:V but comparable in scope.

I like psychic weapons. Especially the ones that let you take control of enemy ships.
