Misc questions concerning combat |
Hi,
some questions about combat:
1.) What's the exact clue behing captureing an ememy's ship? Do I get his tech-level for the installed components after analyzing it in a space yard? I did so, hopeing to get level 20 at meson blasters (I had 10) but after the disassembling my tech-level did not increase.
2.) Once again one of my ships destroyed an enemy's ship although captureing was in progress. Is or will there be an option or a tweak to prevent this kind of friendly fire?
3.) Can I gain experience in racial techs (like time manipulation) I don't have from the beginning by captureing ships? Or planets? Or by trade?
4.) Finally using drones: Guess there must be some way to direct them to specific targets, but couldn't figure it out. Using "ram target" or "use all weapons on..." did not work. All drones flew in a cloud to other ships and detonated there (or were shot off earlier). Doing so, only some fighters exploded, but none of the big ships.
Thanks!
Re: Misc questions concerning combat
there is a limit how much differance you can have in tech in order to gain it
so if you have lvl 10 and enemy lvl 20 that might be too much to gain the level from capture.
Re: Misc questions concerning combat
1) Shael is correct. I haven't searched for the text (if it exists as text), but experience has shown the limit to be about 5 tech levels. Always read the notice before confirming an analysis scrap. It will tell you what to expect, and if it's minimal or none you're better off just keeping the ship.
2) Strats and ship designs have to be fine-tuned and working together if you want to cap ships with any real success rate. See my thread on ship capture for pretty much all I've learned.
4) Drones are quirky. All strats are still buggy in some ways, but drones have an "always ram" text elsewhere which supercedes the strats (in stock) and interferes with manual targeting. There was a drone thread a couple of months ago that told more about it.
Re: Misc questions concerning combat
When gaining tech from analyzing ships, I notice that in my research window...
I get a partially filled progress bar (usually in something I know I have not researched).
I get a 1 turn to completion, in the time to completion bar, even though there is 0% RP going there.
But until I put 1% into researching that, I don't actually get the tech. I remain at my current tech level, then after 1% I might gain 2-3, even though 1% isn't nearly enough to research it normally.
It is a good idea to check out your research window, before and after you analyze a ship, to notice research differences, and to remind yourself to put the 1% to acquire the tech.

Dvoongar mentioned his thread on ship capture. Here is a link to that thread.

Re: Misc questions concerning combat
1) Normally you should get some of the levels the captured/traded ship has more than you...
2) Try to tweak strategies, fleets and use "crippling weapons" like engine destroyers.
3) Normally, no.
4) You are not supposed to be able to control drones in combat - they are interstellar missiles. Try tweaking their kamikaze strategy and setting "do not target" for fighters.
I have the problem that I cant move at all my recon drones in combat. At least with 1.35 they were automatically fleeing...
