Problem with video card and flickering |
Hi, I got the game and patched to 1.35, but have the same problem mentioned here http://www.spaceempires5.com/en-US/node/611#comment-4442
Have a 8800gts and a TFT connected via DVI. When I choose my card and 1280x1024 32bit, I get it windowed, but without problems. However with Primary display I get fullscreen, but with that white flickering and I don't want to cause damage to my eyes because of this game...
So is there anything I can do to get fullscreen with my video card?

Re: Problem with video card and flickering
Some background programs cause flickering as well - what programs are running when you're running the game?

Re: Problem with video card and flickering
I've sent bug reports to Nvidia every couple weeks; wouldn't hurt if you did the same. I havent found a solution either beyond what you have -- playing it under XP.
Re: Problem with video card and flickering
i have the same problem w/ 8800 gts + vista 64
Re: Problem with video card and flickering
Have the same problem. I'm only running it on a nvidia 6800 with vista, but with 2 gigs of ram there's no excuse for 10fps. I can only seem to play it in widowned mode as well. Full screen flickers. Playing it is starting to feel like a chore.

Re: Problem with video card and flickering
I think it's unfair to say no one cares. These kinds of issues involving video cards, drivers, and OSes, can be quite difficult to fix or test - particularly when the configuration is unavailable for testing.
One potential cause of flickering is programs in the background that want their windows on top etc.

Re: Problem with video card and flickering
If MM happens to live in the Central Florida area, I'd happily let him have my entire rig for a week if it'd produce a fix. Otherwise, well, shipping my water-cooled baby would be a little expensive.
There's been too many reports of Vista + GeForce card + SE:V = uber-low fps for it to be mere coincidence. Perhaps SE:V doesn't play nicely with the new Vista graphics subsystem or something? No idea myself..
I did email MM about it several moons ago and he put the ball in nVidia's court. I filed a bug report there, but of course they likely dont care much about a niche game -- too expensive to divert resources from optimizing for Call of Juarez or whatever. I keep up with the latest driver releases and havent seen relief yet.
Re: Problem with video card and flickering
My laptop has respectable FPS for a Geforce 7300 Go card, on Vista. The flickering occurs, but the FPS isn't bad. The frame rate issues aren't even universal...
Keep in mind that Nvidia's Vista drivers are still pretty shoddy affairs. The 8xxx line in 64-bit Vista is really, really terrible. There probably isn't a whole lot for MM to do until Nvidia stops being another ATI in regards to Vista...
Re: Problem with video card and flickering
That was true about Vista drivers perhaps 3 months ago, but SE:V is now the only game I have problems with. I dont run SLI, I hear thats still buggy, nor do I do unusual things with dual monitors, but my games run great.
I can get "okay" rates if I play at laptop-like tiny resolutions too, in the high teens, but it's still a quick slide show that still bogs way down when certain things are on the screen (the main menu is fine, the load menu is okay, but click on a saved game, the flags pop up on the right, and the rate crashes to the teens or worse)
Eventually this will reach critical mass as more people transition to Vista and buy the best-performing video cards on the market at the present time -- nVidia ones. Either nVidia will get enough complaints about it, or MM will, and one or the other will fix it.

If that doesn't work right, then..
nvidia.com -> support
Look for report a bug. I found it after clicking on Vista quality assurance.
Re: Problem with video card and flickering
1680x1050 is a tiny resolution? Its a pretty standard res for not-bottom-of-the-barrel laptops, isn't it?
Re: Problem with video card and flickering
Considering that the DirectX 9.0l layer in Vista is exactly the same as DirectX 9.0c in XP, the issue has to be with the video card drivers doing things in a non-identical manner... Sure the graphics subsystem changed a bit, but that is entirely up to the drivers to deal with, not individual games.
Edit:
Drupal is the most retarded CMS I've ever had the displeasure of using... drop a post to the end of the thread after an edit? wtf?

Re: Problem with video card and flickering
In the setup options, try setting video memory to "SAFE".
