Scanners v. Sensors

Soumis par Lector Rae le Jeu, 2007-05-17 08:31 Space Empires V General

I'm confused about the difference between scanners and scanning ability vs. basic sensors. At higher levels, basic sensors provide scanning ability, so why use scanners?

Additionally, I've have yet to scan (this means see the components of the target ship, right?) any ship with a cloaking device, even with the highest level of LR Scanners or Temporal Scanners or Tachyon Scanners.

Anyways, I guess I don't know for sure what 'scanning' is and how it is different than whatever ability that basic sensors allow.

Scanners go beyond the maximum scanning level of sensors, which allowing more advanced cloaking devices to be detected. Note though that the AI is not able to use cloaking devices right now, so that's why you haven't seen anything cloaked yet.

So it seems sensors always win against AI.

Still confused about 'scanners'

Soumis par Lector Rae le Sam, 2007-05-19 13:24

So in my current game, I built a ship with a normal sensor suite (ECM, Combat Sensors) but I substituted Basic Sensors for LR Scanners. Much to my chagrin, it seems that the sensor range was a single hex around the ship.

Can I take this to mean that every ship will need Basic Sensors to see stuff in a system, and then LR/Tachyon/Temporal Scanners to...well...to 'see' better? Or are these sensors only necessary to help see inside of nebula/storms/whatever; or are they just needed to see cloaked ships? Or are they just needed to see the components of a ship using Stealth or Scattering Armor?

And why is it that Temporal Sensors have a lower max ability than Tachyon Sensors?

Scanners and Sensors do different things. If you only have Sensors, you can see that something is there but can't get any details about it. You need Scanners to get a detailed view of that object (eg ship components).

While I get it now, it seems counter intuitive. LR Scanners mounted alone can't 'see' anything, but can 'scan' at range and at level. Basic Sensors can 'see' but can't get detailed info about anything. Seems a bit backwards.

Scanners should be more advanced sensors, able to both 'see' and 'scan' at range and level. Having an advanced sensor that can scan but not see doesn't make much sense to me.

Then again, I suppose that's why this game is so easy to mod Eye-wink

It does make sense if you decide to think about it properly, you need the sensors to find out where things are but if you want to find out what's inside you need the scanners. scanners provide a better picture provided they have a target to scan. They are, however, unable to send out a wide pulse to scan a large area like the scanners are due to requiring the more focused equipment for the detailed result.

To sum up, sensors see big things in a wide area, scanners see detail given somewhere to look.

(also looks like someone got confused between detecting cloaked ships and scanning components above so just as a reminder, they're separate issues)

Lector Rae- If you really want it that way, then mod it so that it is that way. However the AI wont use it correctly (thus giving you the advantage).

SEV, more than a feeling.

Er...it's not like the AI is anything to write home about (yet).
