AI

Soumis par tuchman le Jeu, 2007-05-17 07:41 Space Empires V General

i've been checking outthe v1.25 demo. is the AI in the full game any tougher? or do you really need a mod to get any challenge?

As of right now, the ai is useless. There are several mods that have been released that have improved ai's. I also believe that unnamed released an ai update to the vanilla game.

From what I gather from some of the people that have played older SE games, mm will eventually release a patch that updates the ai.

couldn't have put it better myself. it's as if the devs thought "that side of the game doesn;t matter... just leave it buggered and we'll maybe fix it later.. MUCH MUCH later".

i wouldn't buy this game if i knew what i know now. the space combat is useless. if it IS working then it's so weird and user UNfriendly that it makes no sense. and i really want this game to work. i love this kinda gme but it's as if nobody can come up with anything near the quality of MOO2 [and believe me... 'quality' shouldn't be a word to describe MOO2 cos it had issues, too]

It depends on what kind of game you like to play. If you want a fairly leisurely explore the universe and expand your empire while meeting aliens and having a few battles, the AI is ok. If you want Command and Conquer in space, you need to play multiplayer or load a mod. Yes the AI is lacking control on a lot of game content at the moment but its modable, being worked on and improved and I find it a very enjoyable way to waste time.

I don't get the comparison, C&C AI was just as horrible.

The nastiest AI I found was in Starcraft Broodwars, I actually gave up playing the game.

The AI in Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds is fair, it at least grasps the concept of throwing different Rock_Paper_Scissors at you to probe your weaknesses and hits you from different angles to probe your defense lines.

All that is done before the naked stars is remembered

Agreed, C&C ai was so scripted. Wait 5 minutes then send wave one, wait 5 more send wave 2, etc. After you withstood the first wave of attacks you have essentially passed the level.

This game has amazing potential for the ai, since going through all the files, every empire has a seperate ai file (something that many people believe why the moo series was so good). Also I'm not an expert at programming, but basically the ministers that control everything could be improved (easily too) and this would be the first step to increasing the ai's ability. Even after the ai script has actually been improved, and is able to implement all the available features (there are files that could be used to use knowledge of other empires to change ship designs, research focus, etc. that have yet to be implemented). After all the improvements have been made, the ai will still be inferior to the human, and after that be thankful that a option was actually added to give the ai a handicap.

Basically if mm doesn't make the ai better, a modder will be able to make every change needed anyway.

At the moment, this games AI resembles an ant trying to get a grips on nuclear physics.

Its never gonna get good, no matter how much you script it, unless SE makers does something radical.
MOO 2 AI was atleast a challenge.

ATM, I cannot get a challenge in this game, I mostly get bored and just play something thats actually fun.

Mods are the way to go. IRM had fair AI but it had issues that held it back, I think people are taking over that mod though so keep an eye on it.

BM is ok.

Best mod AI so far that I've seen is GidMod.

I wouldn't count on a significant AI patch, as I hear, se4 stock never got one worth ooing over.

I have to disagree. Already there are some nice minister scripts out there, very nice.

Nope... multiplayer is the way to go.

The AI might become pretty good in this game (and it will, eventually, see the progress that has been made by mods in 6 months!), it will never be at the level of a human player, like in all other games (except chess). Even worse than most of the other games, since Se5 is so complicated.

I find CnC3 AI pretty good, even if it doesn't expand enough, unlike in Starcraft, but I didn't play CnC3 that much yet and CnC3 seems pretty simple to me.

Do remember, the 'devs' you speak of are a single person. He made every piece of code that runs SE:V. The only assistance he had was with the graphics. It's very difficult to both make a massive game and an amazing AI for said massive game in a reasonable amount of time.
