PLEASE include this in the next patch: Remembering FoW settlements and optional toggle for human and or AI

Soumis par Dizzy le Lun, 2007-04-30 16:52 Space Empires V General

In Fog of War (FoW), enemy settlements dissappear completly and look like uninhabited planets when they are not in sensor range. That's such a major Pain In the ASS! Please fix it so that the last known info on a planet stays that way. This is just a major hang up for me.

Also, if I am right on this one, setup an option where human players have FoW, but AI does not because I hear that AI act stupidly and have a harder time in the game using FoW.

While this would be very nice, I find it unnecessary. Such information can be kept manually, provided all we want to know is where those enemy colonies were last seen. That's what "System Notes" is for. This assumes you have decent sensor coverage - if you only run around with range 2 sight with speed 16 ships, then I'd understand the need for this feature.

When I go to War, I certainly at least know what systems the enemy was last seen in (by manual System Notes) and I should have good enough Basic Sensors that I can send 1 frigate (out of 20~50 in a fleet) to check on likely locations.

I agree there should be a "Remember Colonies" option in settings.txt for this item. The AI actually knows this info already as when it runs through the planets each turn during its thinking, it knows who owns the colony etc. even if doesn't have active sensor coverage of the planet.

I think Dizzy got his name from opening up and then standing on his HDD during defrag of the...P collection... Laughing out loud I have to agree with JTesla too.

Ahem, in more serious note...this is truly a relatively minor issue. If it is so difficult to remember, make a note like Psieye said. That's worst case, if you're well into a large quadrant game and there are a lot of colonies to remember (though I do fine, and I have a bad memory! Laughing out loud ). However, if this is game breaking, then you have an odd method of playing, as running an empire is all about adapting when you need to know something or beat back an assault or whatever else. Drop a cheap frigate with generators in the system if you can't live without knowing, with sensors high enough to reach across full systems. The ship is performing a "recon" mission indefinately, and a cheaply made frigate with just a sensor and standard requirements is hardly a draw to funding.

Ultimately, it doesn't interfere with actual play, just details that will be adjusted after the more important game changing bugs are tended. I'd like it implemented too, but a million other things could be done with higher priority before something so small is touched.

And cheesecake, I ramble on. Shocked

IMO Dizzy is absolutely right with this request.
Considering I do most of my colonizing via the Planets screen filtering the good spots. While it is certainly possible to memorize "enemy" systems or tell the AI to avoid them it would be a lot easier and much more manageable especially in large galaxies to have the last known status of a planet remembered.

Dizzy its only a game when all said and done.

Personaly I would like to have the last seen information displayed as many other games do but I can get round it with the use of system notes and my memory as well as a note pad.

However I consider the way for of war works to be minnor compared to A the memory leak (fixed next patch) and B the stock AI which should be at least as good as those in the BM and IRM

I'd rather Aaron worked on the Hard Code, rather than the stock AI, which can be messed with by us.

there's also the propolsion pods which don't work in similtanious mode, I'd like to see total time to compleation added to the custom lists colomns in the construction queues window, and a facility space left after build q in the custom lists colomns in the colonys window.
there's also a switch needed to overide which mod to use so PBW can update games.
half the intel stuff doesn't work (stealing enemy designs, tech, etc.)
strategies suck compleatly, they are still wrapped around the ugoIgo seIV type design, it should be compleatly re-worked.
there's a whole host of orders which canot be given when multiple ships are selected - like the sentry command, and load cargo etc.
if you colonise with your colonyship in a fleet, you will loose all the ships in the fleet.
ship capture does not work to well, securty stations hardly work at all.
milita does not show up in the ground combat replays.
some quickstart options would be nice, a quickstart.txt or something to change things like the ability to quickstart a similtanious game.

and that's just half my list that I'm bugging aaron about, none of these are softcode problems.

Next on my list of problems I'd like fixed (ringed planets and strategies seems to be ready in the beta patch) would be an auto-renaming feature and keyboard shortcuts (or multi-select ships) in Fleet Transfer.

Ever tried to retrofit 150 ships and update their names? I'm pretty much going to have to change my entire nomenclature logic just so I don't get bogged down with having to rename everything. Then after those 150 ships get retrofitted, I need to look up which ones are complete before tranferring them to a fleet. In that fleet, I need to spend far too long setting 1 ship to Escort/Picket status - not useful when I have maybe 70 or so to set as Escort/Picket.

Furthermore, Fleet Templates would really help, where a fleet's formation, task forces and their formations are pre-set from a list so I don't have to spend 1 minute per fleet just setting this up (and there are a good many fleets I make).

It takes 5 seconds to make a note of which systems I spotted enemy empires in. It takes 5 minutes of rummaging around in the Fleet Transfer window to set up a fleet like I want it - longer if I need to factor in which ships are damaged. I don't even try to rename everything I retrofit.

Intel is also a pretty big problem, but I think as that's part of the moddable scripts somebody could work on that. I wish we could have better control over what ops are attempted though.

I'm kinda with Dizzy on this one, though he could have been more diplomatic with his replies. What's the point of coming here and posting a reply to his comment that basically tells him his complaint is trivial and he should just be a man about it. His response was rude but I think some of the replies were also quite rude, just not as blatant.

Soumis par Grimlock le Jeu, 2007-05-03 17:00

I absolutely agree with Dizzy. For me, the game is unplayable without the Fog of War. I was a huge fan of se iv (my only gripe being the tactical combat, everything else for me was great).

It is quiet a complicated game to play, and there is A LOT of things to micro manage to run a successful empire, having to manually type in notes into the system report is an absolute joke.

Its not physically possible to memorise the locations of every enemy controlled planet and plain simply takes all the fun out of the game by being so unrealistic (for gods sakes its supposed to be a game about building an Empire in Space, yet seeminly there isn't enough technology around to keep track of the last known enemy position)...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS ISSUE!

On a related matter, have the map on the main screen (or somewhere else) have a button to toggle the planets the relevent colour depending on the last information you had as to who claimed ownership of that system. This was a feature in SE IV, i don't see why something so simple and useful could have been left out of SE V.

Well realistically thats what would happen. You scout a system, and six months later, when your colony ships arrive, YOU FIND IT ALREADY COLONISED?! Oh man, sounds like theres gonna be a war on now.
In my opinion it makes it more fun, because it adds flavor to the game. You claimed the colony six months ago, but they didnt hear you do that, and to them it was already theirs for the taking. Besides, all wars have to start for some reason Smiling

Yes, it could happen. But, I think having a symbol showing the last KNOWN status of a planet would be OK as long as a mark is added to show that the information is not current. Maybe, even have the age of the last scan of the planet as part of the symbol. This would certainly make things easier from a recordkeeping perspective. I tend to agree that is would be a very useful feature.

I just made a post griping about this today before I saw this post. I agree 100% with Stellarrat's suggestion regarding age of last scan.

This is a major source of annoyance for me in SE:V, otherwise great game with only a few minor issues remaining (which I have learned used to be and scary issues). Dev has done a great job of fixing this game up since release. Reviewers should re-score the game now that it has been patched Smiling

Interesting.

And good cherry picking there. YES that one thing is the only item included in the various bug list posts that are around here. Good catch there "dude". I really do suggest reading the full list of fixes slotted for the next patch, reading all the bug lists, and perhaps reading some of the other posts in this very thread.

While you’re at it please re-read my post a few times, this is the second time you have replied to it yet you fail to grasp that I’m not opposed to your suggestion. In my opinion if a bug makes the game less noob friendly, makes the game unplayable, or goes completely against commonsense or logic then it needs to be fixed asap.

Some of you might enjoy taking notes of every last detail; however, the typical new player will get frustrated when they spot the enemy and then forget which of the 10 planets was owned by it or if your scout flew past the planet and you didn't see it before it left sensor range.

Fix all the early game bugs now that the unplayable bugs have been fixed.

If we want to play better versions of SE in the future then we need to make sure that the current SE game makes as much money as possible. We need our new players to have their friends go out and buy the game. Someday I want to play a version of SE that will let me fly in first person one of the troops, fighters, escorts, or battleships leading my fleet to take on the enemy fleet and then switch to god-view and control the entire fleet and switch back. The only way we can dream of such fantastic things is if SE continues to bring new players into the community.

I regret to say I find you do have to learn to play 4e games and as SEV is one of the most complex of them it will take longer to do than most. However the point with this sort of game is that you have to do this and it attracts people who like exercising their mental muscles. I agree SEV could be a bit more user friendly at times but I dont think that there is any game or aplication which I have used I couldent have said that of in truth.

Just remember the AI dosent gloat over the stupid things you did which caused you to lose to it so use it for practice so you can enjoy beating your mates and gloating about the stupid things they did which caused them to lose to you.

For an example
"Matt you realy should have not stoped reserching armour when you got shields tech that way your main fleet might not have been slaughtered by my Polaron weapon armed ships and I might not have rolled up your fifty world empire in three game years"

You email MM. If you dont then YOU are a troll as well. Stop putting game improvements off on me. I report em here and get discussion going and if you guys think it's a good idea, YOU do it.

And 4e games are so complicated as is, this remembering FoW settlements is just one more thing that adds user appeal. It SHOULD be part of the game because it IS a nuisance not having it. Less nuisance and more fun should be the mantra of 4e games. Email THAT to MM.

i'm surprised this game got to version V cos how the hell can it be played effectively without other players [i'm talking about the single player game].

surely it cannot be hard to code your own ships to attack where you tell them to?

I'm trying to introduce the game to a few friends to try get a game going, although I'm a bit worried they will get a bit sick of the lack of basic information and data (I'm finding it annoying that I cannot right click on an item on the daily log to find out more information about this new component I researched).

Of course, if I'm getting annoyed by such things, my friends are as likely to be as annoyed with them as me.
