Minor mount idea

OK, so what if researching additional levels of Ship Weapon Mounts reduced the required hull tonnage for a mount? So that way there would no longer be absolute "breakpoints" where it's no longer useful to research upgrades to a hull instead of the next hull, aside from a few extra kT on retrofits? For instance, take destroyers in Balance Mod. At level 3 they're 400kT, the minimum size for the Large mount. What if, though, you could get level 2 destroyers (which you'd get to on your way to light cruisers anyway) using the mount just by researching a few extra levels of Ship Weapon Mounts? And eventually you might even get level 1 destroyers or level 3 frigates using the mount, with enough research...

I think that's a great idea! Has to be carefully balanced, though... and also that will make smaller ships even more powerful compared to bigger ships than they are now...

don´t know....i think it´s overpowering mounts when a mount that gives more range and damage would also reduce the space needed.
how about a seperate mount that doesn´t add range and damage but reduces space and maybe supplycost of the weapon?

But large mounts don't take up extra space. The weapon is the same size...Unless you are saying that the mount should decreace the weapon size? Like a DUC going down to 20?

i dont think he means to reduce to size of the mount itself just make it available to smaller sized ships. so that a mount that would only be available to a cruiser would be available to a destroyer. it still takes up the normal space for the mount but the smaller ship now does more damage per hit. two sides to this thought. 1st is fewer weapons that do more damage as long as you can hit the target. 2nd is more weapons doing less damage for more opportunities to hit the enemy. depending on you preference and targeting capabilities of course.

like the difference between the grayson and manticore ships (honor harrington series). the graysons decided to mount weapons from a larger hull design on their ships so they had fewer weapons but they packed more of a punch.

edit: on the smaller ships it might act more like a spinal mounted weapon and that ship may only have 1 weapon if the ship is to small. but oh what a nasty surprise to anyone who stumbles on a fleet of destroyers that mount cruiser sized weapons. could also build more smaller ships than the larger ones which could swarm the enemy.

Exactly - I don't mean a large-mounted DUC should take only 20 space; I mean you should be allowed to use large-mounted DUC's on smaller ships with enough research into mount technology.

You could allways create multiple types of mounts.....
Rapid Fire
Long Range
Heavy Fire
Each coming in several size models and with varying requirements
Rapid fire more suited to smaller ships, to let them send out curtains of fire, while Heavy Fire more suited to larger ships to punch through armour

Combine that with an IRM style of armour, and you get a huge variety of ship designs possible.
And could probably heavily decrease the number of weapons in the game as a result, instead making the special effects Weapon Mounts, so that it becomes simpler to code the AI with what weapons to use.
