Runtime Error loading saved game

I recently purchased Star Fury (I believe it's version 1.17 on the CD-ROM) and find it very enjoyable. I'm having an issue in that I can start a new game and play it just fine, but if I load a saved game the game crashes. It drops to the desktop with Star Fury and a C++ runtime thang in the task bar. Most of the screen is dominated by a large white window. When I finally got to behind this white window, an error message stated that a runtime error had occurred in Starfury.exe.

I have uninstalled and reloaded the game but have the exact same problem. It never loads a saved game and always errors out.
