Remembering Enemy Colonies |
Here's a suggestion for improving the game. I for one find it really a pain trying to remember which systems have enemy colonies in them, how many and which empire. I don't understand why this all disappears as soon as your ship leaves the system. I think it would be really helpful if this info were retained. I mean, if you send an exploration ship to a system the planet info is all retained, so why not the colony info as well? Perhaps it could be shown partially grayed out to indicate that it is historical rather than current. This would represent last reported intelligence on enemy installations. It could even show a "last updated on" date so you would know how old your system survey was.

embering Enemy Colonies
I have used path Empires -> select -> Send mail -> request a gift -> gift list (?) -> Planets and there is list of race's planets/colonies. Not very elegant way, but I haven't found out (so far) any other method (new player, you know), so if you know better (easier) way, please tell me.

Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
Does the race planets gets updated when new colonies gets added even if you didn't saw them yet? Can you see enemy planets in systems you haven't explored yet?
Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
I completely agree!! But why would I think that anyone at Malfador or Shrapnel really gives a flying bleep? A ton of people have been requesting, moaning and pleading for some type of map system that at least lets you see who the system belongs to (i.e. SE IV Galaxy Map). But instead we get continually gaffed off and are supposed to be placated by little tweaks that really mean nothing because the AI doesn't ever take advantage of them! I'm just saying that some core basics that make playing a huge game worth while are needed. I have not played the game in two months and don't plan on it until I see some real changes on the updates. The last time I played I was using the Inter-relations mod (Which really brings a little more realism to the game). I don't even bother playing the core version because of all the issues!! You would think if you spent the time to send a ship out into space that someone in the vast bureaucracy of your government would write down what they found and where....But apparently not! And yes I am yelling this subject just tweaks me because it seems like such a simple fix but it doesn't get done. I still love the series though, I am just P.O.'d because it hasn't hit its stride yet.
Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
I totally agree. Either that, or for consistancy: when one doesnt have active sensors viewing a hex, black it out instead of greying it out.

Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
Fussy, aren't you? Well, if it requires hardcoding, it isn't such a simple fix because any sort of hardcode has to be balanced with making sure it didn't break anything else to do it. Or it could be simple on the surface, but require mountains of codework. The game is programmed by Malfador Machinations, which has a total employee count of one. If we could only clone Aaron...
I do want to put in a question of what if there are multiple system owners? If I have a colony or two and the AI (one or more even) also have a colony or two...who gets claim? How do you identify? MOO3 had this easily discernible actually, but let's not go there.
It'd be nice if they did this but honestly, it's a minor thing. If you're complaining about something so trivial, however useful it CAN be, it isn't required to play a game. It just helps organize, nothing more. The game is still under heavy development too, so give it time and maybe you'll see it happen!

Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
IIRC in SeIV the small circle representing the system in the quandrant map was filled in yellow when more than one empire claimed the system. It was fairly easy to figure out who was the other(s) empire(s) from the quandrant map (and even easier from the system map since the whole system was shown if you had a single ship in it). It would be also easy in SeV if the fog of war was correctly implemented.
EDIT: I agree system claim is not THAT important, even if it would make the AI better. However fog of war is more important, and after the few annoying bugs left are dealt with, maybe Aaron could look into it?
Also, It appears to me that the system claim thing, without tweaking the AI to use it in it's decisions, should be a lot easier to add than a revamp of the actual fog of war system. But I'm probably wrong.
BTW, what those lines in Settings.txt do?
Can See Star From Memory := TRUE
Can See Planet From Memory := TRUE
Can See Ship From Memory := FALSE
Can See Unit Group From Memory := FALSE
Can See Asteroids From Memory := TRUE
Can See Storm From Memory := TRUE
Can See Warp Point From Memory := TRUE
Can See Comet From Memory := TRUE
Can See Monster From Memory := FALSE
Can See Debris From Memory := FALSE
Can See Derelict From Memory := FALSE
Can See Illusion From Memory := FALSE
And if they do what I think they do, why there is not a "Can See Colony From Memory" line?
Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
You can see colonies from memory. Sorta. If you click on the planet itself, you'll sometimes get a colony screen instead of an empty planet screen.
Those lines in settings.txt allow you to see something after it leaves sensor range. All well and good, except it lets you see them even if they MOVE.
So if that enemy ship runs away, you'll be able to watch it the entire time..

Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
Comets, debris, derelicts, illusions.
Are these implemented or standby items for after bugs get filtered out of the soup?

Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
Does that mean they are hardcoded but unused? Would a modder be able to activate them given instructions on it?
Or are they just pretty looking shiny leftovers that will never be more than a lingering line in a couple files?

Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
They were items that were thought of and a few entries stuck in, but were never touched again. It's possible they could be used in an expansion though.

More to scribble onto the list of Holy List Of Future Ideas For Space Empires VI then.
Speaking of which, is there any word from Aaron on the lifecycle of SEV patching and then serious work on a sequel, or other such plans? Or is there a place to find out?

Re: Remembering Enemy Colonies
This is a huge need to be done thing and I'm not playing or reccomending the game to anyone else till it gets added... I'm picky that way...
