Question about initiating Ground Combat... how? |
I have tried unloading cargo (the Troops) on a planet, but to no avail. Ground combat doesn't seem to want to start. So, how do I go about dropping my troops on a planet, that has no ships or satellites in orbit, and rumbling around in my walkers? Thanks in advance.
Re: Question about initiating Ground Combat... how?
You need to attack the planet i norder to drop troops though if it has no defences the battle will last just as long as it takes for the landing ship to get within troop drop range of the planet and lauch its little landing shutle shortly after which the combat will end.
Re: Question about initiating Ground Combat... how?
No, you will not control any enemy units.
Re: Question about initiating Ground Combat... how?
You don't actually have to order the ground invasion on the tactical screen, just set your transport's strategy to "capture planet" and it'll drop troops on its own in a strategic battle. During ground combat you'll be required to destroy any enemy troops, fighters, or weapon platforms on the planet; meanwhile satellites and mines in orbit will remain under the enemy's control even after the planet is captured, so unfortunately you cannot capture the enemy units by any means.
Re: Question about initiating Ground Combat... how?
It’s better to use tactical if like me you tend to forget to give your transports planetary attack strategy or are using any old freighter with a dont get hurt stratergy as I will do on soft targets since you have a fall back position.

Re: Question about initiating Ground Combat... how?
And don´t forget you can use fighters on ground combat; just load your freighters with them and order them to drop troops (not your carriers, unless you select them right in the beggining of the battle and order them to drop troops as well).
Re: Question about initiating Ground Combat... how?
You can use Carriers as planetary assault vehicles if you set their strategy properly. In other words, on whatever strategy you give them (or the task force they are in) make sure the "launch units" option is set to false. This way they will hold their fighters and will drop them on the planet instead.
Of course, a freighter costs half of what a carrier would cost and can carry more cargo...so it's not a horrid idea to play it that way. But if you want a multi-purpose ship, carriers are a good way to go if you can swap the strategy depending on whether you need it to go ship to ship or planetary assault.

Re: Question about initiating Ground Combat... how?
If you drop your troops on an enemy planet the ground combat will occur at the end of the next turn processing. Hit end turn and after all the other turns have run you will get the ground combat.
