Shipyard Construction Ships/Generic Newbie Questions |
Heya. Another "newbie questions" post.
I was trying to figure out how to put bases around my strategic wormhole points so I can blockade my system without resorting to mine research.
I read on another forum post earlier that you need (and I quote) "Ships with Shipyards" on them. But I cannot find the technology that allows me to put such on my ships! What do I need to do?
This is crucial to my plottings of ruling the sector 
Other questions:
1. Alright, so....is there any point to my having spent 1000 each on crystal tech and temporal tech? The temporal scanner doesn't seem to do anything special, and while some of the crystal planet-side things are nice (like solar collectors in my binary star home system)...I don't have that much space to spare, limiting their use. Additionally, while organic ships are self-healing (or so I have read) - crystal ships don't do any of that (just lower cost) - AND I need to research the regular AND crystal ship tech before I can make them crystal, so its a much larger cost in the long run (extra research + race pick points)
2. Is fighter/sats the way to go? I wanted to be an 'energy being race'; so I picked crystal tech, temporal tech, lowered my reproduction rate/etc - and decided to focus on appropriate weapons/defenses as from innumerous sci-fi shows.
But apparently because the engine techs just increase efficiency (until you research 5 levels of it), and the computer adores making 'mobile engines' instead of ships;....well, it flees. Alot. And those are the only real ways to counter such?
#3. Even despite the above, this seems to be an AWESOME game. I tried Space Empires 4, but I could never get past the interface. I think I'll be playing this for years. I don't really want to try the balance mod (yet) to fix the above problems until I know how to use the stock game well though, if anyone's going to suggest the balance mod.

Testing this one at the moment as I am not sure as I dont play stock all that much and havent played a temperal race since the demo
EDIT Having tested this there is no other prerequsite its just that temperol technology which gives the facilities and the sensor dosent show as an expected result where as temporal weapons do. You do get temperal tech at level one temperal studies but need to reserch it at least one tech level to get the sensor and facilities

I think that crystal ships have lower maintinence costs:
don't quote me on that because i usually only use organic tech:)

To get space based ship yards in the stock game you need to have reserched space yards to tl10+ at wich point you will get a ship yard component you can put on ships and bases. This advances with the tech after that.
Crystal tech is worth it for the armour peircing weapons which are uttlerly lethal before shields come in and remain useful after as they ignore a significant proportion of the targets defences even then. Most of the Facilities are of system scope so you dont need to earmark that much space for them.
