TDirect3dxfile.start - can't find xfile.. oh and hello |
Hi all .
I've had SE5 for 6 weeks now and i ALWAYS get this error message just after i get dumped back to windows. Is this part of the memory leak issue ? and is it cureable ? as i've never much gone past 20-30 turns on standard game start.
also when creating a new sceanrio/game i just cant find a way to add the set races , or are they just added when i set auto-empire create ?
also part 3 , are there any scenarios web sites where i could find some that others ( far better than me at creating them ) to download ?
Thanks in advance for any enlightenment you might provide

The memory leak can be a nuisance there isn’t a cure but a few things can help
1 makes sure that you don’t run too many other programs at the same time
2 make sure that you have plenty 8+ Megs free space on your primary partition
3 give windows more virtual memory and the ability to resize it as required
4 manually save the game and quit every so often how often depends on when the thing grinds to a halt in your case I would save every 15-20 turns
5 don’t use too many AI's the more you use I have notices the worse the problem
6 running in a window helps on some systems and not on others as does minimising and restoring but that can also make things worse. Some people find auto saving helps but from my observations this can make things worse as saving in SEV is process and memory greedy and may become the last straw.
7 turn the music off
8 dont be suprised if the game crashes on exit closing down is another memory and procesor greedy operation.
Hope that helps

You need to edit Settings.txt to enable the new Shipsets/Races for a quickstart game. In a normal game you should be able to choose from the shipsets/race pictures anyway.
Look for "Number of Quick Start Styles" and add the number of new Shipsets to it. Then add a new entry with the name - I think its pretty self explaining.

I couldn't tell you what's causing that error, so I'll just skip that one.
As for the empires, you're right, the 'set' races only get created when you auto-generate an empire. What you can do however, is after you've started a new game, go into each of the AI empires (Click Main Menu->Players, default password is master, then remove the green ticks from beside each player's name), then save the empire to a file (Also from the Main Menu). Then, in future games, you can load the empires from said file from the Empires screen during game setup.
As for new shipsets, the largest repository I know of for shipsets, mods etc, is http://www.spaceempires.net/home/downloads-cat-5.html
