How to measure range on the combat map??? |
A while back I was asking about how range is measured on the combat map because my ships seemed to get awfully close before starting their attacks. I got a lot of comments on combat strategy and squat on how big a square is on the combat map.
How about it? Does anybody know? Reclining minds want to know!!!
One thing is for certain, baseships must be a serious world class size because they are bigger than medium sized planets. A large planet takes up about 4 squares square. So that means that each square should be about 2000 miles across. A baseship takes up 2 squares so that makes them about 4000 miles long? I think they should get a higher tonnage rating being that long.
I was reading about researching missiles with long range to stay outside the range of WPs but I can't control ships well enough to get them to a certain spot (whose range I can't ascertain) to sit there and blast a planet with. Of course, the AI empires don't use WPs so that is a waste of breathe.
I really miss SE4's managable, turn based combat system. I can't use any finesse in this unpredictable, constantly moving, chaos pit of realtime combat. Makes me feel like I'm trying to run 5 characters in Doom with just one controller.

The squares are ~10 ls each, but its hard to tell because you don't always have a straight-on distance.
As far as combat goes: the pause button and auto-pause is your friend.

Exactly, There's no point trying to give orders to your ship in real time. When you need to give orders, press on the space bar (pause), once done press on the space bar again (resume). Doing it this way gives you full control, and it's equivalent to turn base movement but with e real time feeling. It's quite enjoyable this way.

Double post sorry !

Re: How to measure range on the combat map???
I think the scales are relative especially with the sizes of models as if strictly to scale planets would be vast and any ships even the biggest of them minute. The grid I think is calibrated in light seconds but I agree its hard to judge ranges exactly and this is made worse by the fact that changes in ship attack strategy alters the range at which it starts to fire. Most ships defaulting to "optimum firing range" which is generally much less than the weapons maximum range
