Considering buying Star Fury

Soumis par cjtrost le Mar, 2007-03-06 19:20 Star Fury General

I used to play, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, a game called "Wing Commander: Privateer" and really enjoyed it - a nearly RPG-style game where you can play a starship privateer, either naughty or nice or somewhere in-between. Since then, I've been looking for a game similar to it and Star Fury seems to fit the bill perfectly.

The only thing is since the game came out two years ago, I cannot seem to find any reviews on it, though I get the impression from some comments on the forum that the reviews were (undeservedly?) bad. Before I shell out the $20 for it, could you tell me more about the game and your experiences with it - either good or bad?

I also see that Star Fury is included in SE:V, but to be honest, I don't really need another Empire Builder style game since I own several already. Currently, I'm playing and loving Medieval II: Total War. Would you recommend me spending the additional $10 for SE:V with Star Fury included?

All opinions welcome! Smiling

Hey, thanks for the link to the review of Star Fury. That answered a lot of questions and concerns I had about the game. I appreciate the assist. Looks like a download is in my future. Smiling

Alright. That sounds like a good idea - to try a demo version of the Empire Builder game.

You might enjoy a game Mircosoft put out, around 6ish years ago. It was called Freelancer, and it was possibly one of the best games I have ever played, especially in multi-player. I have seen a few copies at my local EB games locations. I suggest that anyone who has not tried this game, should!!

Well, I spent 2+ hours on the tutorial last night and my first impression of SE:V is that it's overly complex. The level of detail is impressive and even intriguing on some level but I don't see myself spending massive hours designing the exact look and equipment of my ships, troops, and banana transports. The exploration and ship movement seems laborious - if terribly realistic. I have to compliment the game makers on the realism and in-depthness (if that's a word). I guess I'd rather spend my time having fun rather than figuring out why my warships always lose their engines in a fight.

Anyhow, that aside - it was Star Fury I was interested in in the first place and that game review I read makes me think it's well worth the money.

The graphics in X3 look really great! It does seem like there's a definite story but hopefully it allows for a good deal of freedom of action. Hmm... thanks for the tip. One thing that looked disappointing about Star Fury from the screenshots is that the graphics didn't seem very good.

I read a few reviews of X3 and they say that's it's very buggy (though it's been recently patched to 2.0, and is very hard to learn because a very convuloted user interface.

How is the learning curve on Star Fury? How about the UI? Those seem like very important details.

X3 is now effectively bug free and whilst the UI looks daunting it’s fairly intuitive once you get used to it. It took me two hours at the weekend and would have been quicker if I wasent an X2 player and the UI having changed significantly between games whilst maintaining similar functionality. The game did have a very bad memory leak on release which is the bug reflected in the reviews however that’s long gone and patches are now free expansions rather than fixes. This problem caused me to stick to X2 but having played my nephews version of the X3 “game of the year edition” it played as well as X2 and looked so pretty

Star fury has is easier to lean and I would recommend the star fury demo as a free try out star fury is a gem of a game but its not as immersive as X2/3 I did however play all of the games three campaigns to completion twice before Christmas last year and found it a lot of fun.

I used to play x2 and enjoyed it a whole lot. About a year ago i found eve-online. It's a mmporpg, sort of like a space simulator. You are a pilot and you can be a pirate, a merchant, and industrialist, a mercenary, etc etc etc, really fun, complex and endless. Bad part is it's online and you have to pay a monthly fee, but you can play for a free trial 15 day period.
If you like the x series maybe you should try eve-online.
cheers

Starfury is quite similar to Vega Strike, only it has better graphics and they got rid of the ability to turn/travel along the Z coordinate and they left out the auto-pilot function.. Sad

Vega Strike also still has better visuals for while your in stations or on planets. Still a lot of room for improvement..then again isn't there always? Sticking out tongue
