TCP/IP Multiplayer trouble, please help!

Soumis par Angela le Sam, 2007-03-03 11:56 Space Empires V Multiplayer

Hello, I have had SE5 for a while now, and after a lot of time managed to talk two online friends into getting it too so we could set up a nice multiplayer game, now they have both gotten it and we were very disappointed to discover that setting up a TCP/IP game proved impossible for us, no matter who was hosting, no player could connect to the host, we all have the Steam version and all have the latest updates, we also went through all that stuff with configuring the firewalls to keep the ports open and using "whatsmyip" to get the right IP and all that jazz, but still its not possible to connect... I'm at a total loss as to what to do and I don't want to just have to tell my friends "Sorry I convinced you to waste your money", so please, anyone know what we could try? We don't live even in the same country so meeting up for LAN isn't going to happen...

If you do a search on this forum there is a set of detailed instructions of how to set up a TC/IP game follow those and you should get it to work. It’s also worth trying PBW as an alternative if you find the procedure a little fiddly.

I would also recommend inviting your friends round as it plays very well as a hot seat game and it will get them in to it .

Well, we know we have tried the right way by now, it just doesn't work and we don't know why, if its not the routers, IP or neither software nor hardware firewall that there's something wrong with, what might it be? Wy can't it connect when everything seems to be okey? And we aren't really interested in anything but a TCP/IP game due to all the fuss with doing those file transfers all the time.

As for inviting my friends, one of them live in England, the other in Germany, and I live in Norway, so thats very unlikely...

Are you sure the host ip is correct that the other two are trying to use to join the game? The players joining must be given a WAN IP address not a LAN IP address. If the host is behind a router the router will normally give your computers a 192.168.*.* address, when the router will have a WAN IP of something like 12.218.*.* ( * = any number ). You have to log in to the router to get the WAN ip address, usally on an status page in the router settings. The players joining to a host who is behind the router have to use the WAN IP of the router to join since it is the router that is directly on the internet and not your computer, the router will then forward them to your computer, and yes the game will still say for the host that the compter IP is 192 something. And if the players joining are also behind a router they will also probably have to use the WAN IP address of their router for the player(their) ip. Hope this helps and is not redundent.
