Early in the game they may be good as suicide craft, but soon the expense of a few drones is more than a small carrier. The footnote to that is that drones can be manufactured on any planet, not just ones with shipyards.

Drones as scouts are always useful, and their speed ensures escape against most opponents, even when the drones are older models.
