Star Wars SEV ship set available

Image de Nath
Soumis par Nath le Lun, 2007-01-22 19:55 SE:V MODs

Hi everyone, I have the following Star Wars ship set available. These models are the highest quality ones I’ve seen to date, but they still run perfectly fine in SEV on my system (a P4 3.2, 7600 GT, 1 Gig of RAM). I've had big fleets of these ships in combat without any slowdowns.

EvilleJedi (and his supporters) originally developed these ships for Homeworld 2. Just to be clear, I didn’t make these ships and I know only a small amount about 3D modeling. I have EvilleJedi’s permission to use and distribute them here for SEV modding purposes. The following ship set is meant to only include ships in service from just before, during and just after the rebellion (sort of a year before A New Hope and a year after Return of the Jedi).

Here are the available ship models

Rebels

Fighter/Corvettes:

X-Wing
Y-Wing
Lambda Shuttle
A-Wing
B-Wing
Trooper Transport
Assault Shuttle
Assault Transport
Gallofree Medium Transport
Corellian Light Gunship
Corellian Gunship
CR90 Corvette

Frigates:

Heavy Gunship
Nebulon-B Frigate
Escort Carrier
CC-7700 Frigate

Cruisers:

MC40a Cruiser
Assault Frigate
Assault Frigate II
MC80 Cruiser
MC80a Cruiser
MC80b Cruiser
MC80 Battleship (*this ship is also known as the Home One class)
MC-90 Cruiser

Bases

Tiny Base: xq_1_platform H
Small Base: Golan Platform H
Medium Base: Golan II
Large Base: Golan III

Empire

Fighter/Corvettes:

Tie Fighter
Tie Bomber
Lambda Shuttle
Tie Interceptor
Storm Trooper Transport
Assault Shuttle
Assault Gunboat
Missile Boat
Assault Transport
IPV-1 System Patrol Craft
*Corellian Assassin Corvette (Identical to the CR90 for some reason)

Frigates:

Carrack Cruiser
Nebulon-B Frigate
Escort Carrier
Lancer Frigate

Cruisers:

Immobilizer 418 Class
Enforcer Class
Strike Cruiser
Victory SD
Victory II SD
Imperial SD
Imperial II SD
Interdictor SD
Executor SSD

Bases

Tiny Base: xq_1_platform
Small Base: Golan Platform
Medium Base: Golan II
Large Base: Golan III
Mobile Base: *Death Star (This model belongs to a great guy who goes by albijoe in the SEV forums. I’ll need to get his permission to give the Death Star model out with this ship set. Also, his model and its textures need a bit of work).

Okay, sounds like a great ship set, right? Well, here is the catch. While the models all look amazing and run fine in SEV, I still have no idea how to attach the included texture bitmaps. What I need is someone who has the skill to do this.

So, if there is someone out there who is good at 3D models and attaching textures, send me a message so we can get in contact. I’ll be able to send you the models and you can finish off the job. You can then distribute these models as you like, just be sure to acknowledge EvilleJedi’s work.

I'm curious, what happens in-game when you load them? Do they not show up and you just get a dot to represent it on your radar? I might be able to attatch them (MAYBE) but I am having trouble with my homemade planet ship. Yours may be a bit easier if you can read the .x files. But yeah.

Hmmm, here is something neat. These models were imported from EvileJedi's mod for Homeworld 2 (with his permission, of course). Now I've found out that Homeworld 3 is coming out in August (it is called Sins of a Solar Empire). I wonder if these Star Wars models will work with that game as well as Homeworld 2 and SEV?

Hi, I've emailed the models directly to a couple of SEV modders and modelers. I did so because the models still needed to have the textures attached and I have no idea how to do it. When, and if, they decide to release these models really doesn't have much to do with me anymore. Sorry.

Nath. Could you also send me the models and the textures...I'll have a go at attaching them.

I've downloaded the Imp ship set on spaceempires.net but they don't have textures and so just look too white in the sector view for my tastes...I've got to the point where I just can't wait anylonger for someone to release an Imp ship set with texture!!

If anyone one is going to release one in the next few days please say and save me the work...other wise...Nath...pm me and I'll give you my e-mail.

Thxs in advance

Thxs very much Nath...I now have all the models...yeah! The models are great...textures too...very impressive.

Though as you know they'll need some work setting up, then the size, firing points, engine glow, pics, slot layout and anything else I've forgotten or problems not yet encountered

I set up a rough test model last night and tried it out in the combat sim...very nice...then set up 80 of them to see if it caused any problems or slow downs...no problems either Eye-wink So tonight I'll really start to work on them.

Thxs again Nath...you've done SEV a great favour...now I'll see what I can do Eye-wink

Re: Star Wars SEV ship set available

Soumis par Nath le Jeu, 2007-05-03 11:18

No problem. I am just glad you think that they are sweet as I did when I first saw them. These models greatly surpass any other models introduced to SEV so far (not surprising when you look at who made them in the first place). Imagine how amazing they will be in game once finished. I suspect that the game's hardware requirements will be raised a notch once you attach all the textures and have massive fleets on screen...but it will be well worthwhile.

Hmmm, I wonder if it would be worthwhile to mod in some Star Wars like weapon effects (like green/red turbo lasers, blue ion bolts and much smaller missile models to represent concussion missiles/proton torps/rockets).

I still don't get why the modders I send the models to months ago all preferred to continue with their own work instead of completing this ready made Star Wars ship set.

Re: Star Wars SEV ship set available

Soumis par Nath le Jeu, 2007-05-03 11:19

Hey Tak. I was just thinking about ship scales for the models I sent you. You won't be able to do real Star Wars official ship sizes. SEV simply can't handle the size differences between fighters at a few meters in length to Super Star Destroyers at 16km. Well, I guess you can, but fighters and smaller frigates won't be visible and Super Star Destroyers will be bigger than planets.

In fact, the SSDs are what really throws the ship set scale out of whack. Consider that the next biggest ship is only about 3 km (Mon Calamari Home 1). If it wasn't for the SSDs, you could probably manage the rest of the ship set close to official size. Still, you can't very well get rid of the SSDs. They are simply too cool looking.

Maybe the best way to go is to make the ship set fairly close to proper scale, with the exception of the SSDs. You could then limit the SSDs to only 2 or 3 times bigger than the Home 1 class.

Of course you'll have even more scale issues to deal with if you decide to do that Death Star suggestion I sent you.

Yes, the scale will be a problem but we'll just have to make do with smaller SSD's as you said they are too cool to leave out.

About using someone else models...if I have permission which for this ship set I do then I have no problem using them...i will make sure proper credit is given where is due...Now to get to work

:cracks the whip at Tak: THat's right, get to work, and don't you forget it! You get a single 5 minute brake to eat and go to the bathroom IF you work hard!

Seriously though, can you tell I'm anxious to get my hands on these models? In my scenerio the ST world has been thrashed and the Federation split into several catagories... right now though it's just "Starfleet" and "Terran Empire". Ofcourse the Terran Empire uses the current Empire ship set.. so anxious to replace it... and then to add in another Federation remanent faction using the Rebel ship set... OH the fun... we just need more ST ship sets... I'm looking forward to the cardassian! The ST mod for SE IV has so many great ship sets for so many factions... would be so cool if all of them could get converted!

Re: Star Wars SEV ship set available

Soumis par Nath le Jeu, 2007-05-03 15:05

Yeah, over sized ships with poorly placed firing points can really cause problems. The BSG ship set suffers a bit from this (may have been fixed since I last used them). Some of the ships were so big, they had difficulties getting their firing points into weapons range. They also had a whole lot of trouble navigating around planets and other ships. It was easy for a fleet of your ships to stack upwards until the top ships were no longer on screen.

If not careful, the SSDs could easily suffer from these problems as well.

I also think a Death Star probably wouldn't be feasible for this game for the reasons stated above X100...which really is too bad. It would have been cool having a huge ship with a Tectonic Bomb component requirement. Hmmm, maybe the ship stacking effect and navigational problems could be reduced to acceptable levels by making the Death Star so crazy resource expensive, that even a good sized empire could only ever afford 1 at a time. Death Stars would still be a bit odd as they would be bigger than even Huge planets (due to scale reasons).

Still, I get that a lot of people would enjoy Star Trek versus Star Wars type battles. It is unfortunate that the Star Trek models available are of much less quality than the Star Wars models. Maybe someone could start a new Star Trek forum topic for finding better models.

Light/medium/heavy versions of every ship hull are made obsolete by size-increases to the hulls by tech level. You can still mod them in, of course, but I don't see much point.

See, I like the way it was in IV over the increase in hull size in V. In IV if I had a need for a light scouth ship I could still make one despite being able to make the heavy frigates... in V I have no choice but to use the work around to get a lighter hull ship. Plus I like haveing lots of differant ship models Smiling

Re: Star Wars SEV ship set available

That is some excellent work Tak. The models and textures are simply amazing. EvilleJedi and Tak both deserve a whole bag of cookies. Wait to people see the bigger ships once they are done.

I like your attention to placement concerning the armor slots for the Tie. Good call. It really does suck that the Ties will only be 2D in space...then again, they will be so small you probably would never notice (likely the same conclusion Aaron came to).

Did you mod the 'Laser' color and length of the beam weapons in your pics?

One last thing I wanted to mention concerning ground units and modding. Do you think it might be more interesting if we simply used official military symbols to represent the different ground unit types? I mean, instead of static non animated unit models sliding around, we could use official military symbols to represent infantry, mechanized infantry, armor, artillery, anti-air weapons, and so on? This would get rid of the ugly ground units featured in the game so far. It would also alleviate the serious system slow downs experienced during ground combat. Finally, it would make ground combat a whole lot more interesting and strategic (and genuine).

For example, inventory slots for infantry units could require 'infantry' components that have the most hitpoints, but little range and speed. Mechanized Infantry could require 'infantry' as well as 'vehicle' components that increase unit speed. Amor could have decent hitpoints, good range and good speed, but if in range of infantry weapons would eventually lose 1v1.

*In case you don't know what official unit map symbols are, they look like rectangles with circles and lines in them. It is how the military identifies units on a map.

Let me know if you want them, and I'll send them to you.

Thxs...I'm gald you're happy...still lots to do though.

Yeah I was wondering about ground units...the official military symbols are a good idea but as you said, that has to be in a mod...I don't think we could get away with that for a normal SEV game or ship set...so we'll need something...AT-ATs? or walkers?...but for now I'll keep on with the ships.

Last thing the beam in the pic is just an APB just as it is finishing firing...(didn't want to pic them while they are firing as I haven't fixed the firing points on them yet...thats a secret, so dont tell anyone) Eye-wink

Hi!

After all I also like the idea of "symbols" instead of real groud combat units.
It would speed up shipset creation 'cause in the end groud units are the "just never finished" part of most shipsets. I would guess it's also due to the very basic implementation of ground combat: compared to space combat it occurs quite seldom and only little tactics are involved.

By the way: is there any way to alter the way planet surfaces are presented in ground combat? Right now it's just too ugly even in terms of hardcore strategists.
I would like to have a more generic view made of icons/symbols: the skyscraper replaced by symbols representing "settlements", facilities having different symbols accordingly. Due to changed scope (whole planet rather than one city) the movement speed should be drastically reduced making the whole thing more slow paced. All these symbols should/could be the same for all mods for the sake of simplicity (imagemod). Taking over a huge planet should take 4-8 turns this way.

I guess this way ground combat could be much more interesting.

Keep the great work going! I'm just waiting for this piece to be ready until starting a new game! (and maybe the next patch...)

According to Lucas Arts (and other semi-official sources), the Empire used mostly hover tanks and hover personel carriers in their ground forces. Just something to consider.

Personally though, using military symbols would be the way to go for the reasons I stated earlier.

I've done a few more ships for the imps...my idea of releasing the two star wars sets has gone out of the window...I'll do the Imps first then the rebels
Now I'm having a few doubts as to how to size the models...I'll give you the ship lengths and then doubt...

Neb frigate 300m
Strike cruiser destroyer 450m
Vic I Lt cruiser 1600m
Vic II Cruiser 1600m
Imp Star destroyer I Battleship 1600m
Imp Star destroyer II Dreadnought 1600m
Super star destroyer baseship 19000m

Basically I'm torn between keeping them as close to Star wars specs as possible...thought that would mean that from the LT cruiser to dreadnought...your in game ship models don't get bigger

Or follow the SEV way and slightly increase model size with each new hull type...so that would mean the Lt cruiser is slightly smaller than the cruiser...this is good because it helps you see what ship is which and it gives you a sense of progress...but its not true to star wars...

Really its not a big deal for personnal use as you can change the ship sizes yourself its more for the release...as to try and give people what they want.
Anyway...here is a pic of the ships being true to star wars sizes...well +/- Eye-wink

aaaggghhhh...PS that blue texture on the SSD that is not where its meant to be has been fixed!

Looking very good Tak. You really came through on this. EvilleJedi would be proud of your commitment to the dark side.

As for ship scale/size, the only 2 ships that will give you any trouble are the Rebel Home 1 and the Imperial SSD. If they get too big, they suffer from pathfinding/navigation problems in combat (which can result in them stacking up so you can no longer see or select them on screen), as well as weapon range problems. With the exception of those 2, you can keep the rest of your ships at the official sizes without any navigation/path finding problems. At least, that is what I found during my tests with these models.

By the way, the Victory Class Star Destroyers are 900 meters, and the Imperial SD I/II and Dominator (just an Imperial SD with gravity well generators) are all 1.6 km. You are dead on with the Nebulon B Frigate and Strike Cruiser sizes though.

Oh, did you ever figure out how to properly place the SEV engine glows? Apparently, you can also choose more engine glows to cover more engines as well as choose the engine glow color you like best.

I suppose you are also going to use the official ship sizes to determine the Kt carry capacity of the ships. That should work fine. Hmmm, do you plan on giving the SSD the official 16 km worth of carry capacity? That certainly would make for an uber ship. I suppose it would be balanced by an extreme build time.

You have tested the models in game, so you are the most qualified to say if the SSD is best at 1.9 km or if you can squeeze a bit more size out of it. We both know that there is no way this ship can get anywhere near its 16 km official size. Do you think a 2.5 km SSD would be possible without to much trouble in combat? Well, you know best so it will have to be your call.

I also like the idea of you making the Home 1 and SSD baseships (I guess the Golan II and IIIs can be the standard bases). This way, we can fit as many other ships into the core Frigate/Destroyer/Light Cruiser/Cruiser/Battleship/Dreadnaught hull sizes.

Hmmm, I suppose nothing is stopping modders from making more hull size classes than what the core game offers. No reason why Light Destroyers, Heavy Destroyers, Heavy Cruisers and Battlecruisers can't be squeezed in.

I was also thinking of modding the tractor beam weapons to have extreme ranges in order to simulate Gravity Well Projectors. That way, the Interdictor class and the Dominator class can actually be equipped with Gravity Well Projectors that work and have a use in combat. No more fleeing transport/colony ships Eye-wink Well, I suppose if there are many transports/colony ships, most will get away as you can only target (and slow down) one ship at a time.

Oh, one last question. You say that you are focusing on the Imperial ships first. Are you planning on doing all the models I sent, or are you just going to do enough ships to fill the Frigate/Destroyer/Light Cruiser/Cruiser/Battleship/Dreadnought hull slots (as well as the Colony, Strikecraft and Transport slots)?

Anyway, here are some sites you can use to check Star Wars ship stats. Please continue with the amazing work.

My mistake on the vic length then with them being 900m...I'll have the Lt cruiser and cruiser the same size...that kind of gets rid of my doubt, as I can now do both star wars size and SEV size mix.

Yeah...the engine glows...not added them yet as if I have to resize i have to then change all the points...so I'll leave them to the end.

As for doing all the models...yes..I'd thought I'd do them all...this was what I had in mind.

1st make an Imp and Rebel ship set using the ships that are more common or famous...and release them.
2nd make any other models that did not fit into the first ships sets and release them so that people can add them to the previous ship sets as they wish.

One thing I dont think I'll be changing is the Kt capacity of each ship...as that is really what has to be done in a mod...I'm not a modder yet...maybe in the future, but for now I'll stick to ships...

Anyway I'm happy you like them so far...back to my shipyard now Eye-wink

Hey Tak, I'm just curious but is the following the basic core game shipset you have planned for the Empire? If it helps, the following ships had the biggest parts to play in the Imperial Fleet in the roles presented and also included are their official sizes.

Frigate: Lancer Frigate (250m)
Destroyer: Carrack Cruiser (350m) *called a cruiser, but really is a large frigate or destroyer
Lt Cruiser: Strike Cruiser (450m)
Cruiser: Immobilizer (600m)
Battleship: Victory I Star Destroyer (900m) *Victory IIs were rarely produced
Dreadnought: Imperial Star Destroyer II (1600m) *Imperial SD I and II look nearly identical

Light Fighter: Tie Fighter (6.3m)
Medium Fighter: Tie Interceptor (6.6m)
Heavy Fighter: Tie Bomber (7.8m)

Light Carrier: Nebulon B Frigate (300m)
Medium Carrier: Escort Carrier (500m)
Heavy Carrier: Enforcer Class (600m)

Colony Hull: Gallofree Medium Transport (90m)

Transports
-Light: Storm Trooper Transport (20m)
-Medium: Assault Shuttle (30m)
-Heavy: Assault Transport (45m)

Bases
-Golan II (2150m) = needs to be reduced in scale
-Golan III (2600m) = needs to be reduced in scale
-SSD (16000m) = seriously needs to be reduced in scale

Maybe the basic core game Rebel shipset could look like this.

Capital Ships
Frigate: Corellian Corvette (150m)
Destroyer: Corellian Heavy Gunship (200-300m?)
Light Cruiser: CC-7700 (400m)
Cruiser: Assault Frigate (700M)
Battleship: MC-80 (1200m)
Dreadnought: MC-90 (1250m)

Fighters
-Light Fighter: A-Wing (9.6m)
-Medium Fighter: X-Wing (12.5m)
-Heavy Fighter: B-Wing (16.9m)

Carriers
-Light Carriers: Nebulon B Frigate (300m)
-Medium Carriers: Escort Carrier (500m)
-Heavy Carriers: MC-40a (500+m)

Colony Hull: Gallofree Medium Transport (90m)

Transports
-Light: Trooper Transport (20m)
-Medium: Assault Shuttle (30m)
-Heavy: Assault Transport (45m)

Bases
-Golan II (2150m) = needs to be reduced in scale
-Golan III (2600m) = needs to be reduced in scale
-Home 1 (3800m) = needs to be reduced in scale

Not sure if this will help you at all on Size Comparison, Tak, but I found this the other night. Not too sure how accurate it is however.

Hey Tak, I know what you mean about Star Wars ship classes being confusing. I think George Lucas never bothered to check up on the definitions for Frigate, Destroyer, Transport and Carrier when he wrote Star Wars.

The official sources have tried to organize ships into their proper classes by size and purpose. For the most part, they had to rely strictly on ship sizes and forget about purpose. The problem with Star Wars ships is that most of them have a multipurpose design and defy proper classification.

For example, the Nebulon B Frigate has decent combat power and is classified as a frigate, but is mostly used as a mini carrier.

Another example is the Enforcer that is officially a Cruiser. The idea was to use the same hull design as the Immobilizer, remove the gravity well generators and increase strike craft carry capacity and increase weapons. The problem is that the ship is still too weak to go head to head with other modern cruisers, and so ended up using its increased strike craft carry capacity in a Carrier role.

Anyway, the size/class I gave a couple of posts earlier is accurate. I hope it helps.

It has...a lot. You'll be happy to know that I've finished all the ships on the imp list...the models at least and I'm half way through doing the slots for them

Just finished the ISD II slot lay out...the reason being I'm home alone for once Smiling

After that it will be a bit of resizing...then firing points and engine glows...any last mins touches and they are finished...by wednesday at the latest.

Wow Tak, that is incredible. You are just running through these models. Thank you for believing me when I said I had to those amazing models available, and simply needed a skilled 3D person to finish them off. I was losing hope that they would ever be used in SEV.

Hey! That just looks great! Scale matches game requirements and is in my opinion quite close to SW. Can't await to command my first Star Destroyer out into the galaxy..

Please - keep this great work going! I personally don't bother much about ground units so if you could just releae the ships with copy'n'pasted ground units from another race I could very well live with it.

Very cool as well Sysop...I liked Halo.

Well back to size... I've sized the Imp ships more or less. There is the pic below. One thing you might notice is that the Freighter and colony ship are not true to starwar scale... I think a freighter in SEV should be bigger than 45m, The same goes for the colony ship...which is slightly bigger than 90m
The SSD isn't true to size either, but that goes without saying.

I've not included the other two frieghters, I was going to include them, but I've run into a small problem and don't know how to solve it...its the same with the carriers(these can be seen though) fighters and SSD.

In the ship window is there anyway to use more than one small icon for a ship type? For example, I have three types of carriers which are different, but in the say... ship creation window the small icon on the left is the same for all three...can they be different and if so how can I do it?

Anyway here's the pic let me know what you think about scale.
EDIT I've reduced the pic size...was a bit big sorry!

Another problem that I'm having is that sometimes...the texture get applied badly and the ships go funny colours...on refreshing the view eg changeing systems then returing, the ship is back to normal...Does anyone know what causes that? and how I might fix it...I've seen the same happen with planets too.

I've heard of that texture glitch before. One guy took a photo of a planet that was all metallic textured, but when he left the system and returned, the error corrected itself. I don't know what causes that problem though.

As far as sizes go, it looks pretty good. If you want, you could reduce the Golan II (small base) by 5% or so. Also, the Enforcer and the Immobilizer should be identical in size since they both use the same hull. It really is a shame the SSD couldn't be increased in size, but there isn't much that can be done about that...not without a whole lot of problems.

Oh, I also wanted to say it was a good idea to use the Star Wars missile/torp instead of the default SEV model. The Star Wars one looks a lot better.

Once again Tak, that there is some awesome work you've done.

Some people have reported missing textures with the empire shipset...

Here is a link to each missing texture. Just download them and move them in to the Empire shipset folder.(you will not be promted to overwrite anything)

Mine: http://www.mediafire.com/?sgi0m1j4yk2

Drone: http://www.mediafire.com/?wfmxlwcd9hz

There will be a new version coming out soonish with sats, ground units an a few other changes...I know! I've said that before, but I am working on it at the moment.
