AI, modding schedule, and something for SE6

Soumis par stuka87 le Mar, 2007-01-16 21:31 Space Empires V General

Hi all, this is my first post here. I'm a veteran SE3 & SE4 player, have played SE5 for a few days.

I decided to shelf the game until at least some rudimentary AI is made by someone. The game engine and all the 'kernel' is all right for me, real time battle is fine, it can stop some old exploits. But right now the game is hardly any fun, because I'm king of the hill from the first turn to eternity. It all boils down to the AI's determination to build cannon ships ONLY. Even though it does have missiles, it just won't use them. A single well supplied CSM frigate can kill at least 4-5 DUC destroyers by letting them chase it at missile range. Lame. I can take enemy homeworlds whenever I wish to. No CSM satellites either. I drop dozens of recon sats in enemy systems and they just don't mind.

So my question is: will the new patch get the AI on its feet? Are there AI mods in the works already? Are there custom races with AI being developed? I played SE4 mainly with the TDM-Modpack, and several custom races which managed to pose a threat. There was an extremely ferocious Xichung for example, coming in with fleets of 30+, composite fleets that is, with minesweepers, carriers, PD ships and even repair ships. What bugs me is that SE5 is not that different. Apart from the real-time battles and some minor changes in tech etc, the vast experience accumulated by modders and veterans of SE4 could have been implemented. From rally points to fleet organization, from ship designs to satellite strategies... they were there in SE4.

OK, I've got another point. Most strategy/3x/4x games actually don't give a choice of war or peace. Civilization is one of these, but the SE franchise is no different. What I mean is that once your planets are full, you have no choice but to build military. I mean in real life there is ALWAYS a lot to do, a lot to spend on. No country ever faces the problem 'well we got everything one could ever need, let's make a war'. There is social welfare, education, industry, infrastructure and all - a country is never 'done'. So there should be an option to spend resources on other projects apart from warships. This would make the whole thing much more interesting. Races would think twice before attacking when they could also spend that money and stuff safely. As it is, you just build up a fleet because there's nothing else to do when the nearby planets have been taken.

Sure I know that's a suggestion for a SE6, later in the future. For now, my question is: when should I check back for an AI to challenge me?

Recomend

I would recommend the Balance Mod and the interrelated Mod as both have had a lot of work done on how the AI behaves. It certainly makes the game much more fun to play. You can beat them but not with any old ship or tactics relying on your technological advantage

Bad AI!

Soumis par Badger le Sam, 2007-01-20 22:26

I fully agree with you- in fact i made a topic on that - please check that out.

Anyway, I would fully agree with the other commentor- evil ginger - that the balance mod (haven't tried the other again since it crashed)has an AI orders OF magnitude ahead of the stock AI.

Give it a try!
Anyone who wants power; by definition, cannot be trusted with it...
