Fast and vicious
Whoa, it is fast and vicious: 20 turns in 3 days!!
Surrender Gusset, or I´ll get deep fried squids for dinner!!!
Getting some nibbles...
Grendel and I are engaged in a KOTH match. I've never played a cluster map before. Wild looking map.
We made contact on about turn 18. Grendel made a very generous treaty offer in an effort to avoid bloodshed...all I had to do was give him every possible concession that one can select in the game's treaty proposal system, in return for the safety of my people. Sadly, a vote among my population was only 25% in favor of accepting, with 26% in favor of rejecting it (49% abstained due to falling asleep in an attempt to read through the entire treaty proposal).
First skirmish on turn 35, in which Grendel's meson frigate makes quick work of the group of old DUC fighters I had guarding a warp point.
And so it begins...

ohh cool, ours has died for
ohh cool, ours has died for some unknown reason.
also just a note - don't try to scrap ships that are not at a spaceyard. it half crashes the game.

Sol Banana Republic Message:
- It is False that our peaceful Empire is building warships to engage the Squid Empire (AKA Turtle Empire). Rumours of border Skirmish are false too. Diplomatic exchange of depleted uranium rounds is usual between civilizated races.
- The rumours about huge factories of squid/turtle soup being built all around our beautiful empire are false too. Same about those ridiculous rumours involving our loved president Grendelio I (TRULY democraticaly elected) and contracts to obtain squid soup monopolio.
- Rumours about nuclear, chemical or biological weapons being manufactured in our empire are false too.
- People spreading such false rumours shall be invited to a long nice estance in our Guantanamo Holyday Resort.

Defeat...
Alas, Grendel has emerged victorious. Very one-sided match, all in all...I am definitely feeling like the newbie that I am. I made a number of mistakes that seem rather silly looking back. Looking at the game as a whole, though, they hurt bad, but were not game breakers. If I didn't make them, Grendel would likely still have won. I was convincingly out-played.
Congrats Grendel.

hehe <3 fanfic

Gusset didn´t play that bad. In fact, I had an awesome good luck. I made a fast expansion, using colonizers as scouts, and I was able to find 4 planets with ruins, and all of them gave me "applied research". This all before turn 20.
With lvl 4 applied research for free so early in the game, it was easy to outplay him. At turn 35, when we had our first squirmish, I had meson frigates while Gusset were still researching DUC weapons. At turn 40, I reached 200K research points/turn.
The carrier/fighter bug played his part too (I´ve just read his post). It crippled heavily his defence, allowing me to win even when seriously outnumbered (like the battle in Butukret system, where my 5 meson frigates were able to destroy 1 light carrier with 60+ fighters with only one casualty).
In future 1 VS 1 games I shall propose "no ruins", since it can be very unbalancing.
In any case, we are few in this KOTH league (sigh...) so I´m sure that Gusset will have his time for payback.
Till then, the Glorious Banana Republic shall maintain its turtle soup monopolio.
Re: King of the Hill League
Hey, i'd quite like to join the KOTH league, but i have never played multiplayer and i'm unsure what is expected of me, i work full time, and i'm doing a part time PhD, which takes up alot of my time. I know it said 20 turns in three days, i assume this was over a weekend!!
Plus i also don't know how PBW games work!! If someone could give me a brief run down!!
-------------------------------------------------------------
I'm not suffering from insanity, i'm enjoying every minute of it!
Do no interfere in the affairs of Dragons, because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup!
Re: King of the Hill League
20 turns in 3 days is one of three things, I would say:
1. A set of opponents who had nothing else to do (weekend, time off from work/school, etc.), or
2. the first 20 turns of the game, when not as much thinking is required, or
3. a lot of minister usage
Generally, once a game is established, it's about a turn every day or two, sometimes longer if someone has to be away from their PC for an extended period. On weekends, several more might be squeezed in if both players have the time.
My limited experience speaking, here.

Someone should sticky this thread... there are a lot of newbies coming by looking for 1v1 games lately

The power of the ancients is now yours to command. You are truly the Master... of the obvious

Re: King of the Hill League
Looks like you'll have to add at least two levels to the hill!

we need some more players
we need some more players for this! it's fun 1vs1 games that tend to be quicker than most PBW games.
