1.20 Broken for PBEM?? |
Didn't even want to try a LAN gmae but PBEM is completely F*CKED up. All of our players have tried to host a new 1.2 (fresh installs) and we all get the Black screen when tring to host the turn. What gives? Something must have been changed at the last moment without being tested?
Need some more details on the problem
How are you processing the turn? Loading it and running it through the app or using the command line option. 1.20 definetly works usign the command line options. I haven't tried it launching from within the app, but I will try that later.
Are you using a mod? There are some changes that will cause problems with mods if you don't update the mod files in a couple places.

Rilbur: that's not how SE
Rilbur: that's not how SE does it. See the history.txt:
Version 1.02:
so you don't really need the last 0, since MM doesn't do the 1.2 = 1.02 thing.
command line
Sorry for being a little slow here. But can you tell me the command line option. I was sure I seen it in the manual somewhere, but I cannot seem to find it now.

Doubt that

I doubt they were in the manual, since command line options didn't exist untill recently

Command line processing
Open a command prompt window. Change directory to the SE5 root directory then type:
se5.exe "Savegame\gamename.gam" "password"
Change game name above to the name of you game and password to the game master password for your game. While the turn is processing you'll get a black screen if you play SE5 in full screen mode of a black window if you play in windowed mode. Once the turn is done processing the black screen will go away. Usually this will only last a few seconds, but on later turns with bigger games it could take several minutes. With SE4 late in games it wasn't unheard of to have turns take an hour to process. I haven't seen any SE5 games that complex yet, but it wouldn't suprise me.
If you are doing an early turn and it hangs like that though you are probably having a problem. Unfotunatly if there are errors it won't show you the errors, just the black screen that never goes away.

thank you
I will try that.
Thank you very much.

BWAHAHAHAHA
Thank you ever so much (again) geoschmo, you brilliant example of sapient hominid life!
by the by, for those using this workaround for the process turn bug ... if you are taking the long way to the se5 command line ...
go to c:\windows\system32 or c:\winnt\system32
copy cmd.exe and paste it in the SE5 directory, and you are ready for the " se5.exe "Savegame\gamename.gam" "password" " command.
... even so, I'm still loving the game.
Make it even simpler with a
Make it even simpler with a .bat file
Create a new text document (.txt file) and fill it with the command line show above. Save and rename the .txt extension to .bat (make sure "hide common extensions" is turned off in folder settings)
Now you just double click that file to automatically launch and resolve the turn instead of typing the command each time
Hopefully this gets fixed soon so we don't need to hack things together to get basic MP function.

Flutter while processing
Geo helped me through this Command Line option. I get a combination of a white, black and a fluttering white screen when I process this way. Not sure if this is good or bad.
Caius

That's a good thing Caius,
That's a good thing Caius, it means you're processing the turn.
I'm still not sure if I prefer the nap inducing blue bar with red and green racing stripes or the seizure-full white/grey/black flashes.
... even so, I'm still loving the game.
STEAM 1.20 will not allow CLI.
Hi all.
I have the Steam version.
When I attempt to process the turn in game via the host option, nothing happens - the screen goes black and that is all.
When I attempt to run via se5.exe "savegame.gam" "p/w"
I get: "The game is not correctly registered under steam"
Is anyone playing via steam and able to run a turn?
Thanks, Stu.
PBEM
Well I confess I don't do Play by E-mail, I do my file transfer on X-fire, but as long as it isn't simul I don't have any issues. Perhaps you might wanna change it to Turn based since you are doing it by E-mail? then again, with more then 2 people it sucks pretty bad...

FYI
FYI: For version numbers, saying 1.20 and 1.2 is NOT identical; unlike in math the decimal point doesn't set a position for the value, it delineates two totally seperate numbers. So 1.12 is actually a more recent version than 1.2, and 1.1.2 is older than 1.2 and so on and so forth.
