Vote for Space Empires 5 as Gamespots best strategy game of 2006

Argh, I really can't call this the best stratergy game of 2006. I know this is going to be a game that stays on my PC for years and will be played on and off until SEVI is released (assuming it makes the Vista change over), but at the moment its woefully inadequate as a stratergy game, the AI is for want of a better word *CRAP* the game data needs a fair bit of work doing on it.

Yes I know that this game is a work in progress and if you look at my posting history here I am doing my best to help the modders and people improve the game, but this award is for the best stratergy game of 2006, not 2007-2010.

It's premature to vote this game a best of game for 2006. I'm just hoping that 1.20 will be playable without any crash and burn bugs. Maybe next year when the game is finished it might be a candidate but not this year in this beta condition.

Especially when you have games like GalCiv2, that while it may not have the depth of SEV, has the stability, support and user friendliness that SEV lacks.

I tend to agree that when this work in progress is finished this will be a contender for 07.

At least Star Wars at Empire War and Galactic Civilizations 2 work or are not as bug ridden as SE5. I can't even get my SE5 to work with patch 1.20, and I have the boxed version from the store. I wouldn't vote for it until it actually works.

Gal Civ is a good game but SEV is much better. It’s a pity that people are still having problems running it but the constructive way of getting that fixed is to talk to MM about the problem.

I would also suggest you have a look at your Pc's set up to see if there problem is something you can do something about. Damage to the computers registry clogged hard drives dodgy memory incompatible drivers and so forth are as likely a cause of the problem as SEV.

I fixed the problem. It was something in the registry that was causing the program to take up processor usage.

I still wouldn't vote for it until a lot more bug weree fixed.

A game needs to have a competative AI at least to qualify as good strategy, that is a missing feature in this game. The AI doesn't even use most of the features given to it, like stellar manip or fighters.

I'm not sure what i would vote for... probably Medieval 2 Total War (Rome had just as bad AI as SE5, btw and it somehow got good reviews yet SE5 did not, always found that strange...) or Galactic Civilizations 2.

I prefer this game to Galciv 2, but the AI being as horrible as it is and some interface issues doesn't make me think it a better game.

GCII is a good game but nothing special and there where things about it which where real negatives particularly the fiddly ship design screen and the total lack of a tactical combat option. It also made or tried to make a virtue of it not having any multiplayer function at all. I think SEV is all round stronger except for the release AI and that can be fixed after all the BM and IRM mod AI's are competitive particularly at the top end. They also play fairly the GCII AI reminds me of CIV I one which frankly cheated at high difficulty levels.

Don't get me wrong I stopped playing GalCivII because of SEV. But in all honesty now, the way the game was released and the need for constant patching has definately hinderd its abilty to even get in the running for game of the year. The potential is deffinately there though, but it should have been polished and not in need of mods, that what a game of the year is. Either way I love SEV...
